Thinking and Philosophizing

• Chinese thinker and social philosopher
• Thinking and philosophies have deeply influenced
  Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese thought and life.
• His philosophy emphasized personal and
  governmental morality, correctness of social
  relationships, justice and sincerity.
• Thoughts have been developed into Confucianism.
• For 800 years his teachings are known primarily
  through the Analects of Confucius (??), a
  collection of "brief aphoristic fragments", which
  was compiled many years after his death.

• Was born into a poor noble family
• Married a young girl named Qi Quan (??) at the
  age of 19, and she had their first child Kong Li
  (??) when he was 20.
• In order to earn his family's living, he had been
  a shepherd, cowherd, clerk and book-keeper.
• When he was 68, Confucius returned home and spent
  the last years of his life teaching disciples and
  transmitting the old wisdom via a set of books
  called the Five Classics

Confucianism

• ? Referred to the three aspects of life
  sacrificing to the gods, social and political
  institutions, and daily behavior.
• Generally, attempts to obtain short term pleasure
  are bad while those, which in the long term try
  to make one's life better, are generally good.
• These concepts are about doing the proper thing
  at the proper time.
• Rather than pursuing one's own selfish interests,
  one should do what is right and moral.

• The best government is one that rules through
  "rites" and people's natural morality, rather
  than using bribery and force.
• Truth must always be represented.
• An oppressive government is more feared than a
  tiger.

Shark Fin Soup (?? , Yú Chì)

• Delicacy usually served as part of a feast, like
  a wedding or banquet as a symbol of wealth and
  prestige.
• Soup is said to be tasteless, prized for its
  texture rather than flavor.
• Sharks are finned (fins cut off and returned to
  sea) then die.
