Presentation Outline
  • Introduction
  • Project Objectives
  • Project Activities
  • Project Deliverables
  • Conclusion

3
Introduction
  • EU member states are pioneer in manufacturing and
    implementation of wind energy technology
  • Remains in number one position in terms of
overall capacity (40,932 MW) as well as
additional capacity (6,174 MW), representing 55
    of the globally added capacity
  • The actions (seminars and workshops) set forth
under the project will provide common platform
for interactions among the eligible actors
involved in the development of wind energy
    technology in Thailand

4
Project Objectives
  • To increase awareness among potential
stakeholders in Thailand regarding wind energy
    technology, cost and potential.
  • Determination of latest developments and applied
research in wind energy sector carried out in EU,
to the universities and other potential
    stakeholders in Thailand.
  • Capacity building through training workshops.
  • Dissemination of wind energy information to the
potential stakeholders and other general publics
by creation of extensive website containing wind
    energy information.

5
Project Activities
  • Report on Wind Energy Development in Thailand and
    EU
  • Kickoff workshop
  • Seminar on Development of Wind Energy
    Utilization in Thailand
  • Training Workshop on Wind Energy Technology and
    Project Development
  • Report on Identification of trade and policy
barriers on promotion of wind energy in Thailand
  • Comprehensive Webpage on Wind Energy Information

6
Kickoff Workshop
  • Held on 31 March 2006 at AIT, Thailand
  • Attended by 20 key stakeholders
  • Participants from EGAT, Ministry of Energy, DEDE,
Energy for Environment Foundation, PEA, and
KMITNB, including Mr. Mads KORN from the
    delegation of the European Commission.
  • Major topics of discussion was
  • Policies and Incentives for Renewable Energy
    Promotion in Thailand
  • Large wind turbine generation
  • Current State of Research on Wind Technology in
    Thailand
  • Prospects of Wind Energy in Thailand

7
Seminar
  • Held on 6-7 July 2006 at AIT, Thailand
  • Attended by 27 key stakeholders
  • Total 9 presentations were made
  • Major topics of discussion was
  • Present scenario and future prospects wind energy
    technology
  • Financial opportunities and benefits available in
    the wind energy sector
  • Grid Integration, Power Quality and Stability
    Issues of Wind Turbine Generators
  • Government policies and programs, tax and
subsidies, CDM and RPS for promotion of renewable
    energy technology.
  • Economic Evaluation of Wind Project and Cost
    Trend
  • PV/Wind/Diesel Hybrid Energy System for Rural
    Electrification in Thailand
  • Economic and Reliability Aspects of Wind Power
    Generator

8
Training Workshop
  • Held on 11-15 September 2006 at Phuket, Thailand
  • Attended by 23 key stakeholders
  • Resource persons to the training were Mr.
Niels-Erik Clausen and Mr. Jake Badger from Wind
    Energy Department, RISO National Laboratory,
    Denmark
  • The training workshop was expected to provide
in-depth knowledge in wind energy technology
    project development
  • Details are available at http//stweb.ait.ac.th/w
    ind/seminar/

9
Topics covered
  • Project development
  • Wind turbine technology and design
  • Integration of wind into the grid
  • Development of wind projects
  • Wind resource assessment and wind measurements
  • Creating a generalized wind atlas
  • Estimation of annual wind farm energy production
  • WAsP software demonstration
  • Economics and financial viability of wind
  • Market and Policies
  • Introduction to environmental impact from wind
  • Introduction to Numerical Wind Resource mapping
  • Visual impact and birds
  • Noise from wind turbines

10
Project Deliverables
  • Press release
  • Project Information leaflet
  • Desk study report (wind energy development in
Thailand and EU, lessons learned, best available
    technology, technology suitable for Thailand).
  • Report on identification of barriers.
  • Seminar materials and proceedings.
  • Training manual and proceedings.
  • Comprehensive webpage.
  • Wind energy information on CD

11
Project Sponsor
  • The project is Co-financed by the European
Commission through EC Delegation in Thailand
    under EU-Thailand Economic Cooperation Small
    Projects Facility program

12
Conclusion
  • Thailand is yet to be reaped the wind energy
    benefits to the maximum
  • Further promotion is essential as the percentage
of wind energy added to the national grid still
lies in a very lower stage
  • Among the major barriers in exploitation of wind
resources are lack of wind data, low turbine
    efficiency, lack of financial schemes
  • sound policy measures are important in order to
    achieve its targets
  • Measures should be taken to increase awareness
among the potential stake holders regarding the
wind energy technology and to increase technical
    and human resource capability
  • The information disseminated through the project
is expected to support Thailand to expand wind
    power development

13
Way Forward
  • Updated Wind Speed Measurement and Wind Power
    Potentials
  • Wind Atlas
