- Trim shrubbery and trees so that doors and
windows are visible - Prune trees so they cannot be climbed up to a
second floor (6 feet from the ground) - Shrubbery and bushes near walkways/driveways
should be no taller than 4 ft

- Place large gauge gravel on the ground near
windows to create noise when walked on - Plant spiny (thorny) plants along fences and
under windows - Can be as effective as barbed wire

- Fences can prevent burglars from carrying away
large items if gates are locked - Store ladders and tools in locked garage or shed

or steel 2 ¾ inch thick - Hollow core or wood panel doors can be easily
broken - Exterior doors should not have glass within 40

- Frame often needs reinforcing otherwise it can be
easily kicked in - Entry doors should have a wide angle viewer
- If your door swings outward the hinge pins will
be exposed. Replace with non-removable pins

- Solid core wood or metal and have a good quality
deadbolt - This door should meet the same security
requirements as a main entry door - Doggie doors can be a means of access for a
burglar

- Use heavy duty strike plate installed with at
least a 3 screw - Screws must be long enough to reach the stud
behind the door jamb - Use a high security strike plate and box on wood
frame doors

- Can provide good protection for an entry door
- When the key is turned the lock mechanism slides
a strong metal bolt from the door to the frame - Bolt should be minimum of 1 throw
- Strike plate connected by a minimum of 3 screws

around the key section - The cylinder guard should be tapered or rotate

- Forgetting to close the garage door is often the
biggest problem - Keep garage door locked at all times
- Overhead track operated doors are best secured
with electronic door openers - Secure the garage door with a case hardened lock
in the track

- Insert screws in the top of the track to prevent
lifting - Install auxiliary lock such as a Charlie Bar or
use a broom stick handle in the lower track

- Factory locks are easily jimmied or pried open
- A simple way to secure-drill a 3/16th hole from
the inside window sash three quarters of the way

- This lock is often used on doors with glass
panels or on other doors as well - Can only be opened with a key from either side
- The key should be kept near the door but not
reachable from the glass panel - Some states prohibit this type of lock in
residence due to fire safety reasons

all the locks re-keyed - Keep your keys secured both in your home and when
out in public - When keys are given to valets or service

- Are particularly vulnerable to intrusion
- Put two or three metal straps or bars across
window to improve security - Replace with glass block windows
- Must still be able to exit in case of emergency

- Ornamental security bars or grills covering the
inside and outside of windows can be an effective
way to keep burglars out - Must be easy to open in the event of a fire
emergency so it does not trap the occupant - Should never be installed on windows of sleeping

installed properly and above all used responsibly - Have three primary elements sensors, controls,

- Inform neighbors youll be gone and ask them to
watch the house - Leave contact information with a friend or
neighbor - Park a car in your driveway and have it

- If you have been burglarized do not enter the
home, call the police immediately from a
