SEA KAYAKING ADVENTURES
The setting tropical islands of the exquisite
Mergui archipelago, Burma (Myanmar)
Comprising over eight hundred islands and
covering an area of ten thousand square miles,
these pristine islands had, until January 1997,
been closed to all foreigners for well over fifty
years. This area is totally untouched by modern
development, with a rich history of maritime
trade, mysticism and piracy. The modern-day
Mergui Archipelago is as it was in days gone by,
bar the piracy! Due to the archipelagos
virtual isolation, the islands are uninhabited,
except for a few sea gypsies the surrounding
seas are alive with an amazing diversity of
wildlife, flora and fauna. Sea Kayaking is the
ideal way to explore the many bays, coves, inlets
and tidal rivers of these Lost islands of
Paradise. This is a unique opportunity to enjoy
the wild unspoiled beauty of one of the last
places on earth which remains the same today as
it was hundreds of years ago.

Be one of the first foreigners to kayak around
the southern islands of the Mergui Archipelago!
Discover the wildlife which we and many of our
guests have seen on these kayak adventures. The
local creatures include wild elephants, Flying
Foxes, Civet Cats, Gibbons, crab-eating Maquaks,
wild Boar, Monitor Lizards, turtles, armadillos,
Mouse Deer, the odd crocodile and fruit bats.
The great variety of birds includes owls, flocks
of parrots and hornbills plus many different
species of snake, including Reticulated Pythons
and a whole lot more!

Kayak around the outlying islands, along jungle
rivers and mangrove estuaries. Trek the hills
and trails through the lush tropical rain forest
or snorkel the pristine coral reefs and rocky
bays.

A close encounter!
3The Moken People, otherwise known as sea
gypsies, are a shy and mystical nomadic race
who wander throughout the Mergui Archipelago.
They are the only inhabitants living here, apart
from a few Burmese fishermen. During the monsoon
season they seek shelter at what is known as the
sea gypsy village on one of the islands, where
the children can attend the little school,
overseen by the resident monk.

The setting for our Safari Camp is idyllic!
Located at the back of a vast white sandy beach,
over a mile in length, the tented accommodation
is scattered throughout a grassy clearing at the
edge of the rain forest, overlooking the beach
and sea. The large main tent is for dining and
relaxing.
When guests are ready to retire for the night
they are lulled to sleep by the sound of the
waves lapping on the beach, and the owls hooting
in the forest. Other facilities include flush
toilets and of course showers!

paradise!
An exciting feature of our Sea Kayak Safaris is
our support vessel SEAL 1 a 9 metre RIB with 2
x 200 hp engines, which transports guests from
Kawthoung (the southern port of Burma) to our
safari camp on Wa Ale Kyunn island. On days that
we want to venture further afield, the kayaks and
guests are loaded onto SEAL 1 and away we go!
