Title: EXAMINING SABBATARIANISM
1EXAMINING SABBATARIANISM Part 2
2Hebrews 87 For if that first covenant had been
faultless, then no place would have been sought
for a second. 8 Because finding fault with them,
He says "Behold, the days are coming, says the
LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the
house of Israel and with the house of Judah -- 9
"not according to the covenant that I made with
their fathers in the day when I took them by the
hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt
because they did not continue in My covenant, and
I disregarded them, says the LORD. 10 "For this
is the covenant that I will make with the
3house of Israel after those days, says the LORD
I will put My laws in their mind and write them
on their hearts and I will be their God, and
they shall be My people. 11 "None of them shall
teach his neighbor, and none his brother, saying,
'Know the LORD,' for all shall know Me, from the
least of them to the greatest of them. 12 "For I
will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and
their sins and their lawless deeds I will
remember no more." 13 In that He says, "A new
covenant," He has made the first obsolete. Now
what is becoming obsolete and growing old is
ready to vanish away.
41 Kings 89 Nothing was in the ark except the two
tablets of stone which Moses put there at Horeb,
when the LORD made a covenant with the children
of Israel, when they came out of the land of
Egypt.
5Hebrews 91 Then indeed, even the first covenant
had ordinances of divine service and the earthly
sanctuary. 2 For a tabernacle was prepared the
first part, in which was the lampstand, the
table, and the showbread, which is called the
sanctuary 3 and behind the second veil, the
part of the tabernacle which is called the
Holiest of All, 4 which had the golden censer
and the ark of the covenant overlaid on all sides
with gold, in which were the golden pot that had
the manna, Aaron's rod that budded, and the
tablets of the covenant
6Romans 74 Therefore, my brethren, you also have
become dead to the law through the body of
Christ, that you may be married to another -- to
Him who was raised from the dead, that we should
bear fruit to God. 5 For when we were in the
flesh, the sinful passions which were aroused by
the law were at work in our members to bear fruit
to death. 6 But now we have been delivered from
the law, having died to what we were held by, so
that we should serve in the newness of the Spirit
and not in the oldness of the letter. 7 What
shall we say then? Is the law sin? Certainly not!
On the contrary, I would not have known sin
except through the law. For I would not have
known covetousness unless the law had said, "You
shall not covet."
7Luke 222 Now when the days of her purification
according to the law of Moses were completed,
they brought Him to Jerusalem to present Him to
the Lord 23 (as it is written in the law of the
Lord, "Every male who opens the womb shall be
called holy to the LORD"), 24 and to offer a
sacrifice according to what is said in the law of
the Lord, "A pair of turtledoves or two young
pigeons."
8Nehemiah 81 Now all the people gathered together
as one man in the open square that was in front
of the Water Gate and they told Ezra the scribe
to bring the Book of the Law of Moses, which the
LORD had commanded Israel. Nehemiah 88 So they
read distinctly from the book, in the Law of God
and they gave the sense, and helped them to
understand the reading. Nehemiah 1029 these
joined with their brethren, their nobles, and
entered into a curse and an oath to walk in God's
Law, which was given by Moses the servant of God,
and to observe and do all the commandments of the
LORD our Lord, and His ordinances and His
statutes
9Ephesians 212 that at that time you were without
Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of
Israel and strangers from the covenants of
promise, having no hope and without God in the
world. 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once
were far off have been brought near by the blood
of Christ. 14 For He Himself is our peace, who
has made both one, and has broken down the middle
wall of separation, 15 having abolished in His
flesh the enmity, that is, the law of
commandments contained in ordinances, so as to
create in Himself one new man from the two, thus
making peace, 16 and that He might reconcile
them both to God in one body through the cross,
thereby putting to death the enmity.
10Colossians 213 And you, being dead in your
trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh,
He has made alive together with Him, having
forgiven you all trespasses, 14 having wiped out
the handwriting of requirements that was against
us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it
out of the way, having nailed it to the
cross. Colossians 216 So let no one judge you in
food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a
new moon or sabbaths, 17 which are a shadow of
things to come, but the substance is of Christ.
11- When we were given the new covenant we were
given - A new name Acts 1126
- A new religion embracing both Jew and Gentile
Gal. 113-23 and Gal. 327ff - A new law Rom. 82
- A new Mediator 1 Tim. 25
- A new priest Heb. 728
- We were given a new day which is called the
Lords day in Rev. 110.
12Jesus was raised on the first day of the
week. Mark 161 Now when the Sabbath was past,
Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and
Salome bought spices, that they might come and
anoint Him. 2 Very early in the morning, on the
first day of the week, they came to the tomb when
the sun had risen. See also Matt. 281 Luke
241 He appeared to His disciples on the first
day of the week on 2 different occasion in John
2019 and verse 26
13The church was born on the first day of the
week. They partook of the Lords Supper on the
first day of the week. Acts 206 But we
sailed away from Philippi after the Days of
Unleavened Bread, and in five days joined them at
Troas, where we stayed seven days. 7 Now on the
first day of the week, when the disciples came
together to break bread, Paul, ready to depart
the next day, spoke to them and continued his
message until midnight.
14They were told to give on the first day of the
week. 1 Corinthians 161 Now concerning the
collection for the saints as I directed the
churches of Galatia, so you also are to do. 2 On
the first day of every week, each of you is to
put something aside and store it up, as he may
prosper, so that there will be no collecting when
I come.
15- External evidence
- The Didache (c. A.D. 120) declares that every
Lords day the Christians gather themselves
together and break bread (ANF.VII.381). - The Epistle of Barnabas (c. A.D. 120), in
discussing such things as incense, new moons, and
sabbaths, says that the Lord abolished these
things in deference to the new law of our Lord
Jesus Christ (ANF.I.138). Later, it is affirmed
Wherefore, also, we keep the eighth day with
joyfulness, the day also on which Jesus rose
again from the dead (I.147).
16- Justin Martyr (A.D. 140) declared that on the
day called Sunday the primitive Christians met
for worship. He further stated that this was the
day on which Christ was raised from the dead
(I.186). - Clement of Alexandria (A.D. 194) spoke of the
one who keeps the Lords day as glorifying the
Lords resurrection in himself (ANF.II.545). - Tertullian (A.D. 200) argued that the old law
had been consummated thus the observance of the
Sabbath is demonstrated to have been temporary
(ANF.III.155). Elsewhere he says that Sabbaths
are strange to Christians, and that they share
together the Lords day (70).
17- Eusebius (A.D. 324), known as the father of
church history, stated that sabbath-observance
does not belong to Christians. On the other
hand, he asserted that Christians celebrate the
Lords days . . . in commemoration of his
resurrection (26,113). - Noted historian Philip Schaff concludes The
universal and uncontradicted Sunday observance in
the second century can only be explained by the
fact that it had its roots in the apostolic
practice (478-479).
18- They say you cant eat pork Lev. 117
- The Bible says
- Matthew 1511 "Not what goes into the mouth
defiles a man but what comes out of the mouth,
this defiles a man. - 1 Tim. 41-5 Every creature is good if it is
received with thanksgiving - Col. 216 we are told not to judge someone
because of meat. - Acts 1015 And a voice spoke to him again the
second time, "What God has cleansed you must not
call common. Also see Rom. 14
19- They teach man is wholly mortal with no entity
capable of surviving death - The Bible teaches
- Man is made up of body, soul, and spirit
- Matthew 1028 "And do not fear those who kill
the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather
fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and
body in hell. - 1 Thessalonians 523 Now may the God of peace
Himself sanctify you completely and may your
whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved
blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
20- Our spirit comes from God and at death it
returns to God (Eccl.127 Zech. 121 Heb.
129). - The account of the rich man and Lazarus in Luke
16 refutes their doctrine of "soul sleeping."
21They deny that Hell exist The Bible says Mark
943 "If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off.
It is better for you to enter into life maimed,
rather than having two hands, to go to hell, into
the fire that shall never be quenched -- 44
"where 'Their worm does not die, And the fire is
not quenched. Matthew 2546 "And these will go
away into everlasting punishment, but the
righteous into eternal life."
22Revelation 1411 "And the smoke of their torment
ascends forever and ever and they have no rest
day or night, who worship the beast and his
image, and whoever receives the mark of his name."
23They teach the foot washing is an ordained
practice that is to be done in the church.
24They teach that you are suppose to Tithe The
Bible says 1 Corinthians 162 On the first day
of the week let each one of you lay something
aside, storing up as he may prosper, 2
Corinthians 97 So let each one give as he
purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of
necessity for God loves a cheerful giver.
25They use musical instruments The Bible says Eph.
519 and Col. 316 authorize us to sing only
26They believe you must be baptized to join the
church but that baptism is just a public
confession that you have already been saved. The
Bible says Baptism is the point of salvation
when your sins are removed in Acts 238, Acts
2216 and 1 Peter 321.
27- They usually have one elder per congregation and
a board of deacons and each congregation is
regulated by what their church manual says which
is constantly being updated. Their headquarter
are located in Silver Springs Maryland - The Bible says
- That all congregation are autonomous and that
the head of the church is Christ Eph. 523. - There is always plurality of Elders
- Our church manual should be the Bible and not a
collection of beliefs and bylaws created by man.
28They have been teaching for about 150 years that
Jesus is about to come The Bible says Mark
1332 " But of that day and hour no one knows,
not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but
only the Father.
