  • Bandwidth Reduction Techniques
  • Network Rules
  • DIS Filter Updates
  • TSR Updates
  • Conclusion

3
Introduction
  • DMOC, formerly TACCSF, participates in and
conducts several distributed training events each
    year
  • DMOC synthetic battlespace infrastructure
  • Several WAN connections to DMOC
  • Over 25 T-1s
  • DMOC internal networks
  • Over 100 VLANs
  • DIS filtering and data transport functionality
    continuously added for training events
  • DFA and TSR have adapted to ever changing event
    requirements

DIS Filter Functionality
7
Bandwidth Reduction Techniques
  • Network Rules
  • Network use for only exercise data
    (DIS/NATO-EX/etc.) during the exercise
  • No FTPs during exercise or integration testing
  • Maximize bandwidth by adjusting heartbeat rates
  • Aircraft Entity State PDU heartbeat rates
  • 5 seconds
  • Ground Entity State PDU heartbeat rates
  • 55 seconds
  • IFF and Emission PDU heartbeat rates
  • 10 seconds
  • Quality of Service (QOS) added to routers

8
DIS Filter/Analyzer (DFA)
  • Linux platform
  • User configurable gateway (LAN not HLA gateway)
  • Multiple NICs
  • Filter criteria are applied to PDUs as they are
    read (minimal latency)
  • Exercise Identification (ID)
  • PDU Type (Entity State Fire Detonation Signal
    Start/Stop etc.)
  • Allow/Deny by Site/App/Entity and DIS Enumeration
  • Interactions (Fire/Detonation/etc. PDU) from
    denied entities are also denied

9
DFA GUI
10
DFA Added Capabilities
  • Additional PDU Types
  • DFA Manager
  • DIS Voice Auto Subscribe
  • Transport Function
  • PDU Update Rate Change
  • DIS PDU Delay
  • Range Filter Shapes
  • Multiple Paths between networks
  • DFA on SGI OS
  • Data Conversions
  • Boeing J Signal PDUs to SISO J
  • DIS Enumerations
  • IFF

11
DFA Proposed Added Capabilities
  • Add TADIL J messages to DFA teleport capability
  • DFA Manager recovery
  • Ping through DFA
  • Configure PC as gateway to pass pings
  • Pass non DIS data
  • Can use TSR on same machine with different ports

12
Software Router Overview
  • TACCSF Software Router (TSR) is a transport
    utility (not related to OSI)
  • Minimal impact on existing sites and systems
  • Fixed bandwidth limitation
  • Non-uniform bandwidth load
  • Support for all UDP-based broadcast data
  • DIS
  • NATO-EX
  • Video images
  • Free text messages
  • Voice over IP

13
Software Router Overview
  • GNU/Linux platform
  • Deployability
  • Remote operation
  • Low cost
  • Data metering and buffering
  • Maximum packets per second
  • Maximum bytes per second
  • Packet priority
  • Multicast ensures a single copy of data on a
    network

14
Software Router Overview
15
Software Router Overview
  • Configuration
  • Local routes
  • Remote (bridging) route
  • FIFO size
  • Maximum bytes per second
  • Maximum packets per second
  • Debug level
  • Network utilization and health monitoring

16
Software Router GUI
17
New TSR Features
  • Graphical User Interface
  • Multiple config files
  • Simple forwarder function
  • Bridging route medium
  • UDP
  • DIS Set Data PDU wrapper
  • Bridging route protocol
  • Multicast
  • Unicast
  • Broadcast

18
Conclusions
  • DIS Filter LAN GATEWAY
  • Transmitter side filtering
  • Multiple routes per filter
  • Data-content filtering
  • Data conversion capability
  • DIS Filter Manager
  • TSR TRANSPORT UTILITY
  • Provides data flow metering and priority scheme
  • UDP protocol converter (ATM/network friendly)
  • DIS Set Data PDU wrapper
