Adjective
  • Words that describe or modify a person or thing
    in a sentence.
  • There are three different types!

Limiting Adjectives
  • Also known as determiners because they actually
    determine something.
  • There are 6 different types!

Articles
  • a, an, and the
  • EX The brown car is a piece of junk!

Demonstratives
  • this, that, those, these
  • EX This song is better than all of those songs
    he sings.

Numbers
  • Any number used in a sentence
  • EX There were three kittens next to the two
    dogs.

Possessives
  • his, her, their, our, its, your, yours, my
  • EX His tire blew while his wife was driving.

Possessive Nouns
  • Occurs when nouns are used as adjectives.
  • EX Toms guitar was stolen yesterday.

Indefinites
  • some, few, many, several, no, any, etc.
  • EX Kelly ate some popcorn at several movies.

NOTE
  • Any of these determiners must appear before
    a noun or pronoun in order to function as an
    adjective!!!
  • If any of these words stand alone, they
    function as pronouns!
  • EX This cord is frayed. (adj.)
  • This must be changed. (pronoun)

Descriptive Adjectives
  • These are adjectives that describe. They answer
    the question What kind?
  • They usually come before the noun or pronoun.
  • EX White swans swam on the blue lake.

Predicate Adjectives
  • These are adjectives that occur after a linking
    verb, and they always describe the subject of the
    sentence.
  • EX The milk smells sour.
