Design
  • Standard 8
  • Students will develop an understanding of the
    attributes of design.
  1. Everyone can design solutions to a problem.
  2. Design is a creative process.
  3. The design process is a purposeful method of
    planning practical solutions to problems.
  4. Requirements for a design include such factors as
the desired elements and features of a product or
system or the limits that are placed on the
    design.

4
Design
  • Standard 8 continued 6-8
  1. Design is a creative planning process that leads
    to useful products and systems.
  2. There is no perfect design.
  3. Requirements for a design are made up of criteria
    and constraints.

5
Design
  • Standard 8 continued 9-12
  1. The design process includes defining a problem,
    brainstorming, researching and generating ideas,
    identifying criteria and specifying constraints,
    exploring possibilities, selecting an approach,
developing a design proposal, making a model or
prototype, testing and evaluating the design
    using specifications, refining the design,
creating or making it, and communicating
    processes and results.
  2. Design problems are seldom presented in a clearly
    defined form.
  3. The design needs to be continually checked and
critiqued, and the ideas of the design must be
    redefined and improved.
  4. Requirements of a design, such as criteria,
    constraints and efficiency, sometimes compete
    with each other.

OK, What about BME Design?
  • What is so special about us?
  • Input
  • Output
  • Content
  • , then ERC matters

The Knowledge Triangle Design
15
Design Is
  • Verb conceive, invent, to formulate a plan for
devise, to have as a goal or purpose intend
  • Noun A drawing or sketch especially a detailed
plan for construction or manufacture, the
purposeful arrangement of parts or details, the
art or practice of making designs, an ornamental
pattern, a plan or project, or a reasoned
    purpose intent.

16
The Design Course _at_ VU
  • Lecture 2.5 months
  • Projects (industry, faculty, other, 5 mo.)
  • Product (catheter, database, pacifier )
  • Process (C_at_ clinic, Oral Surgery clinic)
  • Unusual (Softball, C. Elegan, Heart Fiber)
  • Grand Challenge (Capstone Design)
  • Oral, written, poster, device as output

17
What is different about BME Design?
  • Why not combine BME, EE, ME, ChE, CSE in a big
    design pot?

18
Answers
  • It is done has value
  • Potential for a complete prototype is improved
  • Mimics real life
  • When do you do the BME specific lecture material
how do you guarantee BME topics?
