Required materials
  • Sharpie (black)
  • Microbiology Laboratory Theory and Application
    (BRIEF ed.) by Leboffe and Pierce, Morton
    Publishers
  • Always read your assignment before class.

Grading
  • 4 pop quizzes (25 points each)
  • 1 Pet report (100 points)-unknown identification
  • 1 lab final (100 points)
  • 1 midterm (written) 50 points
  • 1 technique grade on gram stain (50 points)
  • TOTAL-400 points

Attendance and makeup tests
  • Attendance is mandatory if you want a good grade
  • Anyone who misses the lab practical (final) will
    get an oral exam
  • Make up tests are harder!
  • If you dont come to class you get behind on your
    lab work and confusion is the result!
  • If you dont come for a scheduled make up test
    without calling to cancel, you wont get a second
    chance.

Classroom policy
  • Absolutely NO eating or drinking in class
  • We are working with live, potentially pathogenic
    bacteria in lab
  • Be careful with the equipment, glassware, flame,
    cultures, microscopes
  • Dispose of paper products in waste basket
  • Dispose of contaminated materials and old
    cultures in Biohazard area (buckets)

Rules
  • Read introduction p. 1-5 (there will be a quiz
    next week over the syllabus and these pages)
  • Turn off Bunsen burners when not in use and keep
    them in the middle of the table when in use.
  • Wear gloves when staining or handling organisms
  • Tie hair back, dress appropriately for lab days
  • Label cultures with sharpie

Rules cont.
  • Contact instructor immediately if you spill or
    break something
  • Do not walk around with an open culture dish or
    tube
  • Close tubes and dishes quickly (the longer they
    remain open the more likely it is your culture
    will get contaminated.)
  • Dispose of used bacteria in biohazard area
  • Put everything away after use

Lab daily schedule
  • Wash hands and station when you first come in
  • Roll call
  • Introduction by TA or Instructor
  • Review last weeks exercise/note results
  • Receive cultures/media and inoculate
  • Clean equipment (microscope), dispose of used
    cultures, clean table, wash hands
