- Courses in our majors push students to a higher
level in their quest - for knowledge. Although Western Carolina
University is accredited - by the Southern Association of Colleges and
Schools (SACS), - the university holds accreditation/membership in
more than 50 - other state and national associations. In fact,
after visiting our - campus and critiquing all aspects of WCU, one
member - of the SACS accreditation team remarked that
- our motto, indeed, should be

Professions operates several special centers,
programs and offices that provide services to the
region and clinical opportunities for students.
12Center for Mathematics and Science Education
- Provides assistance to the public schools of
North Carolina to - increase the number of licensed mathematics and
- science teachers
- provide presently licensed mathematics
- and/or science teachers the opportunity
- to update skills and knowledge
- provide information and assistance in
- obtaining advanced degrees in mathematics and
science - improve and expand the relationship between the
public schools and higher education - provide opportunity for basic research in
education
13Department of Public Instruction Consultants
- DPI consultants for exceptional children and
behavioral support services to assist local
school administrative units in providing
appropriate educational services to children with
special needs
14Developmental Evaluation Center
- The DEC is a service agency for seven local
counties providing developmental evaluation,
recommendation for services, treatment, and
guidance for families of newborns, infants,
toddlers, and preschool children.
15Model ClinicalTeaching Program
- Promotes excellence and innovation in teacher
education programs and collaboration with public
schools. - Resources provided to public school teachers,
serving as clinical faculty, to team-teach
methods courses with university faculty.
16North Carolina Secondary and Middle School
Committee
- Part of the Southern Association of Colleges and
Schools - Serves over 450 secondary, middle, special
purpose and unit schools from Murphy to Manteo
17The Office forRural Education
- Assists rural elementary and secondary schools to
improve the quality of their programs by
conducting policy studies, performing practical
classroom research, providing instructional - and administrative support services, and
conducting summer programs including - The Cullowhee Experience and
- The Legislators School.
18Reading Center
- The center provides diagnostic, remedial services
and reading improvement courses for children,
college students, and adults.
19School-University Partnership
- A collaborative project involving WCU and public
schools in WNC - Part of a statewide network of partnerships to
create clinical school settings for the
preparation, induction, and continuing
professional development of educators
20Speech and Hearing Center
- Provides outpatient diagnostic, treatment, and
consultative services for persons with known or
suspected speech-language and hearing disorders - on campus and in outreach clinics
- in Cherokee, Haywood, Jackson,
- and Swain counties.
21Special Programs
The Office of special programs assists in
organizing special events for the college,
including student recruitment activities,
scholarship awards, Teachers of Tomorrow day, and
coordinates the North Carolina Teaching Fellows
Program for WCU.
22Instructional Technology Center
The Killian ITC serves as the focal point for
the teacher-education technology initiative
offering student computing facilities,
multimedia development hardware and software, and
has graduate assistants on duty at all times for
personalized help. The ITC also serves as a WCU
electronic classroom and has a full complement
of PC and Macintosh computers and associated
peripherals.
