What Is Vigilant Guard? Vigilant Guard is an
exercise program sponsored by the National Guard
Bureau. The program provides an opportunity for
National Guard Joint Force Headquarters (JFHQs),
Joint Task Forces (JTFs) and Field Units to
improve command and control and operational
relationships with internal, regional civilian
and military partners against homeland security
threats.

7Exercise Scenario Overview
General Scenario Description
Seismic stations throughout the Mid-South have
recorded a large earthquake in the Mississippi
Valley area. The quake was centered on the New
Madrid Seismic Zone. Initial estimates suggest
the quake measured approximately 7.7 on the
Richter Scale and was centered in the vicinity of
Marked Tree, AR.
