Accrediting Organizations for Graduate Medical
Education are Reexamining Their Standards
  • Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical
Education (ACGME) Outcomes Project part of a
    broad reexamination of medical education.
  • Emphasis on a programs actual accomplishments
    through assessment of program outcomes
  • Six competencies developed cover many areas of
importance to high quality patient care

3
Assessing the actual accomplishments of a program
requires a different set of questions
  • 1. Do the residents achieve the
learningobjectives set by the program?2. What
evidence can the program providethat it does
    so?3.How does the program demonstratecontinuous
    improvement in its educational processes?

4
The ACGME has identified six critical, core
competencies
  • Patient CareMedical KnowledgeProfessionalism
    Systems-based PracticePractice-based Learning
    and improvementInterpersonal and Communication
    Skills

5
The implementation of the new programs is taking
place in phases.
  • Initial effort -- Programs develop assessment
tools that are increasingly valid, reliable, and
    useful measures of competency-based educational
    objectives.
  • Programs will ultimately be expected to show
evidence of how educational outcomes data are
used to improve individual resident and overall
    program performance.
