Title: General Surgical Instruments

1
General Surgical Instruments
  • Forceps
  • Scissors
  • Knife Handles

2
Forceps
3
Adsons Plain
  • Used for grasping delicate tissues where a tooth
is not wanted. They may also be used to apply
    steri-strips after skin closure.

4
Adsons with Teeth
  • Small tissue forceps used for grasping. It is
the forceps that is always used while suturing
skin. It is also used for very fine tissues
    where a tooth is necessary.

5
Adson Browns
  • Similar to the Adson with teeth but with several
more teeth running up the length of the tip.
Used on tissues for grasping things that need a
stronger grip such as small pieces of bone.

6
DeBakey Forceps
  • The most commonly used forceps of general
surgeons. It is used for grasping fragile to
moderately dense tissue in deep incisions
(appendectomy, breast, hernia, and bowel cases).
When a general surgeon asks for forceps, this is
the one he is most likely to want.

7
Plain Dressing Forceps
  • Grasping forceps that are used mainly for packing
material into narrow openings. They have no
    teeth and a substantial tip.

8
Rat Tooth Forceps
  • This is an aggressive grasper that should never
be used near bowel or vascular structures. Used
mainly by orthopedic surgeons around bone.

9
Ferris-Smith Forceps
  • These are heavy forceps used to reapproximate
strong tissue. They are especially useful in
orthopedics or on abdominal peritoneal fascia.

10
Russian Forceps
  • These forceps have a grasping tip that is in the
shape of a scoop. It holds large amounts of
    tissue or other materials.

11
Scissors
12
Lister Bandage Scissors
  • Heavy scissors used for cutting things other than
human tissue such as drapes, and dressing
materials. The horizontal tip is used to protect
the patients skin from being cut while clothing
    or dressings are cut away.

13
Mayo Scissors-Curved
  • Used for cutting dense tissues such as young
    breast, uterine, and peri-osteal tissues.

14
Mayo Scissors-Straight
  • Used primarily for cutting suture. Never use
curved scissors to cut suture or anything other
than human tissue. Reserving curved scissors for
only cutting tissue keeps them sharp, which is
essential for the success of the procedure.

15
Metzenbalm Scissors
  • Fine tipped scissors used for cutting delicate
tissues such as intestines, blood vessels and
    general dissection.

16
Knife Handles
17
3 Knife Handle
  • This is the most common knife handle used and it
is needed on almost all cases for cutting skin
    and tissue. It holds 10, 11, 12, and 15
knife blades. The blades are disposable and are
part of all counts. They must be disposed of in
the sharps container. The handle is not
    disposable.

18
7 Knife Handle
  • This cutting instrument holds all of the same
    blades as the 3 handle (10, 11, 12, and 15).
It is narrower and longer than the 3 and is
used in narrow deep holes such as the nose.

19
4 Knife Handle with 20 Blade
  • The 20 blade is the only blade that may be used
with this handle. It is used for cutting very
large incisions. It is used infrequently.

20
Beaver Knife Handle
  • This knife handle accommodates specialty blades
in a variety of shapes. The blade is inserted
into a groove at the top and then twisted into
    place. Cutting.
