Our Mission
The Mission of Medical University of Varna is to
make the most of its qualities for a better
health way in the future. Medical University -
Varna is not only a fundamental, educational,
scientific and medical center in Northeast part
of Bulgaria and The Black Sea region but also a
holder of basic and most important values of high
quality of education namely providing an adequate
environment for training guaranteeing research
and training opportunities for development
accessibility and equal rights for everyone
opportunities for personal and professional
development and traditions. Moreover our mission
centers on providing world quality of higher
education, post graduate education in the field
of medicine and healthcare management and gained
therefore the recognition by the international
universe of science and practice.

History
The birth date of Varna University of Medicine is
October 1st 1961. The foundation of the third
biggest Higher Institute of Medicine in the
northeast of Bulgaria provides professional
medical personnel and specialized health care.

Varna Medical University has a 45-year history.
It is considered to be among the leading
universities in Bulgaria. Since its foundation 10
351 Bulgarians and 1 077 foreigners from 45
countries have graduated Varna Medical
University. The alumni of the university come
from Asia, Africa, America, Europe and the Balkan
countries.

Medical University "Prof. Dr. P. Stoyanov -
Varna is a state medical school which has
undergone regular accreditation by the National
Agency for Evaluation and Accreditation at the
Council of Ministers in execution of the Law on
Higher Education in Republic of Bulgaria. It is
an autonomous higher school for students'
training in medicine, dental medicine, public
health and health care management as well as for
postgraduate studies. It is a diagnostic and
medical treatment center of national and
international repute.

The Faculty of Medicine
The training in medicine is full-time only. The
course of studies lasts 6 years and includes 10
semesters and an internship. The education is
carried out in 15 departments and 47 clinics
under the guidance of 110 full professors and
associate professors and 277 assistant professors
and lecturers. Upon graduation students obtain
Masters educational degree and professional
qualification physician which give them the
right to practice medicine in EC member
countries. Since October 2004 the 6-year
English language programme for medical training
has started and since its establishment the
medical training can be conducted entirely in
English, too.

The Faculty of Dental Medicine
Since the academic 2005/2006 the Faculty of
Dental Medicine has been opened as a confirmation
of the increasing reputation and acknowledgment
of Varna Medical University. The academic
faculty consists of outstanding specialists from
all over the country and the applicants interest
to the specialty has been growing. The training
in dental medicine is full-time only. The course
of studies lasts 6 years and includes three
stages medicobilogical training, clinicomedical
and a pre-graduation internship in prosthetic
dentistry, conservative dental treatment, dental
(oral) and maxillo-facial surgery, pediatric
dental medicine, orthodontics and
parodontology. Upon graduation students obtain
Master's educational and the qualification degree
of dental physician.

The Faculty of Public Health
Established in 2001. Its mission is to meet the
challenges of public health in Bulgaria through
providing high quality of academic training,
scientific research and practical activities.
The Faculty of Public Health is a leader in the
training in the following specialties Health
Care Management Public Health Management of
Health Care Services Nursing Midwifery The
Faculty is member of the Association of the
Schools of Public Health in the European region
(ASPHER). Most of the Faculty graduates occupy
leading managerial positions in healthcare
establishments in the regions and the country.

• The duration of the full-time training is three
  years and it is conducted according to syllabi
  based on the unified state requirements for each
  specialty.
• The duration of the academic studies is 6
  semesters, the last being dedicated to
• pre-graduation internships.

Postgraduate Studies
The postgraduate training of physicians and
nonmedical specialists is carried out in the
University departments and clinics in accordance
with the current legislative acts and
regulations. Over 1 400 postgraduate students are
currently specialising in all disciplines related
to medicine and healthcare at Varna Medical
University.

Scientific Research

• A strategy for promoting research in Varna
  Medical University has been developed with a
  particular focus on socially significant
  diseases, organization and management of public
  health services and social health.
• Varna Medical University publishes the following
  editions on a regular basis
• the journal Scripta Scientifica Medica with
  scientific articles written by university staff
• the journal Health Economics and Management
• the International Bulletin of Otorhinolaryngology
• the international journal of cell biology

One of the priorities of Varna Medical University
is to establish and maintain active international

well as to participate in joint scientific

left their memorable presence in the University.
It is difficult to count their number but the
Universitys team today cherishes their
traditions - their legacy for high professional
achievement, hard work, moral ethics and
responsibility as well as their unlimited

not matter unless each of the Universitys
disciples carries these values in their heart
since these values are eternal. The highest
value of humanity in the cause called Varna
Medical University is adopted and translated by
every disciple in their own language.

International events
Varna Medical University is the host of numerous
scientific congresses, conferences and symposia
in medicine, public health and dental
medicine. Varna is the second largest city in
Bulgaria with a population of over 500 000
inhabitants. It was founded more than 2 500 years
ago. The oldest gold treasure in the world was
excavated here. The beautiful city of Varna with
its attractive location, well-developed
infrastructure, 5 universities and intensive
cultural life contributes to the success of our
scientific events.
