What candidates can apply for in 2007 (1)
  • Applicants can apply for Specialties and FTSTAs
  • All programmes are August entry
  • All programmes are in year multiples (length of
each depends on specialty and level of entry i.e.
    ST1, ST2, ST3 or ST4)
  • A Unit of Application (UoA) is the geographical
area administering applications to the specialty
and broadly relates to deaneries (except in GP)

5
What candidates can apply for in 2007 (2)
  • Possible application combinations in terms of
  • Specialties,
  • UoAs
  • Applicants can apply at only one level for a
    single specialty
  • But can apply at a different level in a second
specialty where skills match a different level of
    person specification
  • There will be two recruitment rounds for most
    specialties

6
Applicants who dont get into run-through
training in 2007
  • For F2s who dont get a place on run-through
training, they can apply in tandem for an FTSTA
  • The same will also be the case for SHOs unless
they have three or more years of SHO training
which will qualify them to be able to apply for a
career post (bearing in mind that availability
of these posts is driven by service need)
  • To be eligible for career posts, trainees need a
    minimum of 4 years, post-qualification
    training(these arrangements are not
significantly different to the current system in
    this respect)

7
FTSTAs (1)
  • FTSTAs will be offered at ST1 and ST2 in most
    specialties
  • Also offered at ST3 in paediatrics and psychiatry
only as these two specialties include three core
    years in their new curricula.
  • Max 2 years FTSTA in any one specialty
  • Need to reapply in open competition after 1st
    year of any FTSTA

8
FTSTAs (2)
  • Once a doctor has undertaken two years of FTSTAs
in a specialty, there are several options open to
    that doctor, e.g.
  • Seek appointment to a career post
  • Apply for a run-through training programme at the
    appropriate level
  • Apply for an FTSTA in another specialty
  • In 2007, doctors can apply to FTSTAs during 1st
    and 2nd recruitment rounds
  • Selection for all FTSTAs is likely to be
confirmed at the end of the second round of
    applications.
