  • Background (1)
  • A survey of mothers who had a baby in
    Gloucestershire within the last four years took
    place during February and March 2007
  • The survey was carried out to inform the Trust on
    users view on environmental aspects important to
    them when giving birth and during the recovery
    period in hospital
  • Respondents were given the opportunity to provide
    qualitative comments relating to the physical
    aspects of the room in which they gave birth and
    also the room in which they stayed in after they
    had their baby

  • The questionnaire was made available to a wide
    audience within Gloucestershire, including
    GHNHSFT staff, Gloucestershire PCT staff and
    Social services staff
  • E-mails were also sent to Gloucestershire
    Breastfeeding Supporters Network, Gloshub, the
    Miscarriage Association
  • Questionnaires were also posted to play groups
    and nurseries throughout the county and to
    National Child Birth Trust members
  • Additional questionnaires were available upon
    request from the PPI Department
  • The survey was adapted from the National
    Childbirth Trust (NCT) Creating a better Birth
    Environment Toolkit

  • Questionnaire also available on the Trust website
  • 426 completed questionnaires were returned

  • Privacy many would prefer single room, or very
    small bays and access to quiet area
  • A communal area for both mothers and babies and
    more space to move around
  • Ability to change temperature and lighting
  • Better facilities for preparing food and storing
    drinks
