APHA Gerontological Health Section 2005 Call for
Abstracts and Awards The Gerontological Health
Section (GHS) welcomes abstracts for the 133rd
annual APHA meeting in New Orleans, LA on
November 5-9, 2005. Submissions related to the
2005 Annual Meeting theme of Evidence-Based
Policy and Practice" are encouraged. Areas of
interest include Issues in Older Womens Health
Issues in Rural Health International Aging
Issues Issues Relating to Health in Diverse
Ethnic or Cultural Groups Caregiving for Elders
Clinical Issues in Aging End of Life Care
Environment and Aging Immigrant/Migrant Health
Drug Coverage for Seniors Home Care and
Long-term Care Best Practices Medicare and
Medicaid Delivery, Effectiveness, and Reform
Issues Mental Vitality and Aging Consumer
Directed Care Residential Living Options for
Older Adults Self-care for Chronic Diseases
Workforce Issues for an Aging Society and
Assistive Technologies and Devices for Aging
Adults with Lifelong Disabilities. Individuals
may submit up to two (2) abstracts as first
author to the GHS. Submissions may be for poster,
oral, or roundtable session formats please note
desired format on the abstract form. THE DEADLINE
FOR SUBMISSIONS IS EARLY FEBRUARY, 2005. Check
the APHA website (www.apha.org) for the exact
deadline. To present an abstract, you must be an
APHA member and register for the meeting. If
you wish your abstract to be considered for a
special GHS Award please indicate so on the
abstract submission form. Each abstract can be
considered only for one award. You may, however,
submit different abstracts to be considered for
different awards. See next page for a listing of
GHS Awards. We invite submissions for Symposiums
(Session Proposals, 90 minutes in length).
However, there will only be a few timeslots
available for Symposium Sessions. These proposals
are more likely to be accepted if they are
submitted along with each individual abstract.
This complete package gives the reviewers more
substance from which to judge the overall merits.
These Symposium Session proposals should
contain 1. An overall Symposium Session
abstract, including a rationale, the proposed
paper titles, and author(s), 2. Clearly label
the Session abstract as SESSION ABSTRACT (fill
in your Session Title)" on the electronic
submission page form when entering your proposal
this can be edited later 3. The proposed
moderator and discussant (if applicable)4. Be
sure that each individual proposed presentation
submits a separate abstract under the same
restricted "category" (session title), otherwise
they may become lost in the shuffle5. Put
contact information (phone and e-mail) for person
in charge of Symposium Session directly on the
overall Session abstract so we can contact you
easily and6. Indicate whether or not you would
like to have the individual abstracts considered
for other formats, if your Symposium Session is
not accepted, please state, "YES, I WOULD LIKE TO
HAVE ABSTRACTS CONSIDERED SEPARATELY" or "NO, I
DO NOT WANT TO HAVE THESE ABSTRACTS CONSIDERED
SEPARATELY".The following criteria will be used
to evaluate abstracts Reviewers will evaluate
whether the following criteria are addressed
Implications identified (required for
practice-oriented abstracts) Innovativeness of
ideas (required for theory-oriented abstracts)
and Presentation of empirical results (required
for research-oriented abstracts). For further

Excellence In Research on Older Women and Public
HealthAn overriding goal of the this Award is to
recognize individuals who make a significant
contribution to research on womens unique health
concerns and the role that public health
strategies play in improving the health and
well-being of American women. Betty J. Cleckley
Minority Issues Research AwardThe purpose of
this Award is to recognize individuals and their
research efforts that have the potential to
improve the health and functional status of older
people who are members of diverse ethnic or
cultural groups.Nobuo Maeda International
Research AwardThis Award is for research on
topics pertaining to international aging and
public health. The award is intended to
recognize and further the career of leaders in
international research and policy
development.Retirement Research Foundation
Masters Student Research Award and Laurence G.
Branch Doctoral Student Research AwardThese two
Awards, both funded by the Retirement Research
Foundation, honor outstanding students for
exceptional research during their training.
Individuals honored by these awards have
completed a research project as a student.
Research projects are completed in the areas
related to older adults.Aging and Rural Health
Research AwardThe purpose of this Award is to
recognize research efforts that have the
potential to improve the health and functional
status of older people who live in rural America.
James G. Zimmer New Investigator Research
AwardThis Award recognizes new investigators,
defined as someone who is within three years of
completing a terminal degree. The Award is
intended to recognize and further the careers of
future leaders in research.Inquiries for the

who will forward nomination forms. Philip G.
Weiler Award for Leadership in Aging and Public
HealthThis Award recognizes the best of past and
present leadership concerned with ensuring the
highest quality of life for our older population.
Those eligible for this award have provided
leadership in the field of gerontological health,
and include, but are not limited to, public
officials, policy makers, practitioners,
teachers, researchers, and funders.Lifetime
Achievement AwardThis Award recognizes
individuals and organizations that have made a
significant contribution to public service,
scholarship, or science in the areas of
geriatrics and gerontology.Chairs
CitationThis Award is given to persons who have
made outstanding contributions with leadership
and service to the Gerontological Health Section.

For Excellence In Program Innovation should be
sent to Allan Goldman, MPH, at abgoldman_at_dhr.state
.ga.us, or go to www.archstone.org. This Award
recognizes best practice models that have been in
operation for ten years or less that have
effectively linked academic theory with applied
practice in the field of Public Health and Aging.
