Forensic Psychologist (prison and probation
services)
  • Work mainly in the prison and probation service
    to develop intervention techniques and treatment
    programmes for use with offenders and those under
    supervision.
  • Develop treatment interventions for offenders to
    address their psychological needs (e.g. manage
    depression, etc).
  • Min. entry GBR 21 degree ideally a PG
    qualification, accredited by BPS.
  • Pre-entry experience usually required in a
    relevant field (probation / prisons)
  • Training achievement of M.Sc. in Forensic
    Psychology plus Stage 2 of BPS Dip. in F. Psych
    (2 years supervised practice).
  • Starting salaries - 15,804 - 18,912. Salaries
    after 10-15 yrs - 27,023 - 38,898.
  • Apply direct to HM Prison Service or Nat.
    Probation Service.
  • Demand significant one of fastest growing
    areas of employment for psychology graduates
    (Grad. Prospects, 2005).

  • My job is different every day. It helps if
    youre open minded and willing to work at it
    because Im sure not every prison is as accepting
    of the benefits of a psychology department as
    Chelmsford. With the Prison Service I honestly
    feel like Im doing something that matters. A lot
    of people inside are hurting and if my work can
    make a difference to them then thats what its
    all about.

    assessment and management of risk with the
    provision of expert supervision
  • Work closely with police and prison officers plus
    local authorities, health, education and housing
  • Training 2 year Dip. Probation Studies, managed
    by 42 probation boards via regional consortia (in
    effect, this is a second degree, completed in 2
    years)

  • Trainees employed by individual services and
    receive salary. Trainees receive 13,455.

  • Civilians employed predominantly by police
    forces
  • Attend crime scenes and collect evidence
  • Unsociable hours travel work can be
    distressing
  • Complete 9-week course at National Centre for
    Scientific Support Criminal Investigation
    (Durham University). Usually employer-funded.
    Later, take Diploma course CPD.
  • Posts advertised in press and via constabulary
    websites.

    every other job Ive done because its a

  • Academic skills experience drive and

    improves upon qualification
  • Further study and/or training is all-but
    inevitable
  • But, options for Hope Psychology graduates can be
    exceptional!
