do they think is important? How do they think
about the world? How can one appeal to those
concerns and beliefs to make a particular case?
ETHICAL APPEAL (ETHOS) What is the speakers
purpose? What is the speakers position with
reference to the topic and the audience? How can
that position be used to promote his/her purpose?

What is the situation? Why is this topic
particularly important right now
(exigency)?
Judicial Rhetoric focuses on the past and the
relationship between audience and message/matter,
asking what we can do about a given situation
Forensic rhetoric focuses on the past and mostly
deals with the relationship between the speaker
and the matter, asking what happened in the past.

LOGICAL APPEAL (LOGOS) What genres are available
to the speaker? To what kinds of discourse will
the audience relate? What information do they
believe is true? What kinds of information will
they be more inclined to accept?
