Leader in charge of running the Phase II Lottery
    (16 groups, 16 Committee Members)
  • Surgery Core
  • a number will randomly be assigned in groups of
15 students, meaning one Lottery for each of the
following group 1, groups 2/3 together, and so
    on.
  • Surgery Subspecialty
  • Numbers assigned for surgery core will be
reversed for the same 15 students (called
    snaking).
  • Pediatrics
  • a Lottery is held for each group of 22 23
students (e.g. one for groups 1/2, one for groups
    3/4)

7
Phase II More Details (cont.)
  • Obstetrics Gynecology
  • same as Pediatrics
  • Psychiatry
  • order will be snaked with OB/Gyn (i.e. the
    numbers are reversed).
  • Internal Medicine
  • approx. 31 students will be randomly assigned a
    number for this rotation.
  • used by the Internal Medicine Clerkship Directors
    to assign students to locations
  • We do not control this Lottery, but the
Coordinator may use these numbers to assign
locations for in-patient portion, and snake the
    numbers for 2nd Medicine rotation.

8
What We Control and Dont Control
  • Our class controls varying degrees of the Lottery
    for each rotation
  • We control Phase I
  • We control the locations of rotations for
  • Pediatrics
  • Surgery Core
  • Surgery Subspecialty (Ortho, Trauma, ENT, Ophtho,
    Peds, Plastics, Urology, CT)
  • Obstetrics Gynecology
  • Psychiatry
  • Locations are assigned by the department for
  • Family Medicine
  • Neurology
  • Internal Medicine (we actually provide Lottery
numbers that the department uses to place you)

9
Married/Dependent Preference
  • MDP is an option
  • All rotations will be in Augusta (barring very
    unusual circumstances)
  • You may not choose a rotation outside of Augusta,
even if out-of-town slots are available.
  • No preference is given in Phase I, since this
    Phase does not determine locations.
  • The following students qualify for
    Married/Dependent Preference
  • Individuals legally married on or before July 5,
    2005.
  • Individuals (or spouses of individuals) who are
pregnant at the time of the Lottery.
  • Individuals with children under the age of 18,
    regardless of marital status.
  • Individuals with another legal dependent (e.g. an
elderly parent or grandparentnot your dog)
  • Must fill out Form F Married/Dependent
    Preference (due Friday, January 14th).
  • If multiple students who are taking
Married/Dependent Preference are in a group, we
ask that you consider choosing another group, for
    the following reasons
  • If too many in 1 group, then there may not be
    enough Augusta slots MDP students.
  • Also, non-MDP students might be in jeopardy of
not being able to do the required minimum of 18
    weeks in Augusta.

10
Special Extenuating Circumstances
  • Any issues not addressed that require you to stay
in Augusta, need to request in writing and submit
    it by Monday, February 14.
  • The Lottery Committee will pass the information
    on to Dr. Albritton
  • Or you may also contact Dr. Albritton directly
(still must submit in writing to Lottery
    Committee)
  • Unacceptable excuses
  • Pets
  • Home ownership
  • Extracurricular activities (i.e. your intramural
team will have to play on without you)

11
Groups
  • Up to 3 students may choose rotation order as a
    group.
  • The group selects at one time using the highest
(i.e. worst) number of any member in the group.
  • Each student in the group must fill out Form B
    (due Friday, January 14th)
  • You are bound by this grouping unless there are
not enough slots available in any group. In this
case, the individuals in the group will choose
rotation groups in numerical order (based on
    their originally assigned numbers).
  • BEWARE - you run the risk of not having enough
    available spaces for your group!
