Title: WMS: An Environmental Application for MnDOT
1WMS An Environmental Application for Mn/DOT
- 2006 MN GIS/LIS Conference
- October 5, 2006
- Valerie K. R. Svensson
2What is WMS?
- WMS Watershed Modeling System
- It is a comprehensive and integrated hydrologic
modeling program - Extracts hydrologic model input
- Automated modeling tools
- Apply graphical user interface
- Model output in various forms
3What is WMS?
- Developed by the Environmental Modeling Research
Laboratory of Brigham Young University - U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Waterways Experiment
Station
4How WMS Is Used?
- Delineate Watersheds / Sub watersheds
- Quad Maps
- Watershed Maps
- LIDAR
- Land Surveys
- Develop hydrologic models
- Cut Cross Sections
- Examine Hydraulic Properties
5How WMS Is Used?
- Compute hydrologic parameters
- Composite Curve Numbers
- Infiltration Parameters
- Runoff Coefficients
- Produce hydrographs
- Detention Basin Analysis
- Detention Basin Design
- Storage Curves
- Routing
6How WMS Is Used?
- Generate reports
- Summaries of Analysis
- River modeling
- Floodwater predictions
- Routing
- Scenario Planning
- Urban planning
7Watershed Delineation
- Create, merge and manipulate terrain data
- Automatically subdivide watershed
- Automatically compute hydrologic parameters
- Manipulate stream networks
- Overrides based on watershed knowledge
8Watershed Delineation
Digital Elevation Model (DEM) loaded into WMS
with Drainage Basin and Water Bodies Delineated
Terms A - Drainage Area BS - Basin Slope MSL-
Maximum Stream Length MSS- Maximum Stream Slope
9Watershed Delineation
Quad maps can be brought in as a background
image. Drainage area can be made transparent
so map details can still be seen.
10Using WMS Tools
Examine Hydraulic Properties and Export to Other
Applications
11WMS Computations
WMS can compute SCS composite curve numbers,
infiltration parameters and runoff coefficients
from available data sets.
12Detention Basin Analysis/Design
13Evaluating Peak Flow
Uncertainty in parameters can be used to generate
probabilistic hydrograph results.
14Using WMS Information
15River Modeling
Create stream geometry and cross sections
16Floodplain Delineation
Delineating a floodplain in WMS is a quick way
to get an estimate of inundation limits. Users
can create maps depicting flood extent and flood
depth.
17Floodwater Prediction
In addition, users can compare two sets of river
stages to create an Impact Map, which highlights
increases/ decreases in flood depths.
18Floodwater Prediction
19Using WMS Information
- Developing Reports
- Comparing Results
- SCS
- HEC-RAS, HEC -1
- TR-20, TR-55
- Evaluating Methods
- Identifying Limitations
20WMS Benefits
- Comprehensive
- Modular
- Integrated
- Flexible
- Compatible
- Automated
- Visual
