Title: CSIDC2001 Awards Ceremony IEEE Computer Society International Design Competition
1CSIDC-2001 Awards Ceremony IEEE Computer Society
International Design Competition
- Alan Clements
- Chair, CSIDC-2001
2Agenda
3The Vision Statement
- The CSIDC will
- provide teams of students with the tools to
implement computer-based solutions to real-world
problems - provide a first-class project that requires
students to specify, design construct, test, and
document a system
4CSIDC Goals
- Establish a competition that is prestigious,
exciting, and relevant to the needs of the
students. - Improve the dialogue between universities,
professionals in industry, and government. - Better prepare students for careers after they
graduate.
5Thanks to the CSIDC-2001Technology Sponsors

7Special Thanks to
- On behalf of the IEEE Computer Society the CSIDC
executive would like to thank all those
volunteers who gave their time to this project to
help make it a success.
8Special Thanks to
- Stacy Saul
- Bill Perry
- Mike Lutz

- Janie Schwark
9The Bluetooth Wireless Communications Project
- Bluetooth is a new technology with the potential
to revolutionize personal computing by providing
low-cost cordless links between systems such as
laptop or palm computers, cellular phones, and
printers. - All teams in CSIDC 2001 were given two Bluetooth
kits to link two systems or a system and a
peripheral.
10The Bluetooth Wireless Communications Project
- The teams have been asked to use the Bluetooth
kits to design a system. - Teams are free to specify any system they wish,
although we hope that the final system is of
benefit to society. - The CSIDC executive is looking for excellence and
innovation combined with a flair for inventing a
potentially useful product that exploits
state-of-the-art technology.

17Final Remarks
- CSIDC is an excellent competition probably the
best computing competition in the world in terms
of its scope, its depth, and the opportunities it
presents to the students. -
18Final Remarks
- The first completion CSIDC-2000 was a great
success. CSIDC-2001 has been even better. - Students have been given an opportunity to take
part in a major project and they have used this
opportunity well. Instead of learning textbook
theory, theyve had to grapple with the
complexities of recently released hardware and
software. Theyve been unable to ask their
professors for help because they had equipment
the professor hadnt seen! The students were
leaders not followers.
19Final Remarks
- In order for CSIDC to thrive in future years, it
requires technology sponsors, financial sponsors,
and volunteers. I would like to ask all those who
have taken part in CSIDC 2001 to put something
back in the competition by helping with CSIDC
2001 and beyond.
20Final Remarks
- We require financial sponsors for CSDIC 2002 and
beyond. If you can help locate possible donors,
please contact Ron Waxman, Chair of CSIDC
Funding.
21Final Remarks
- I have enjoyed being Chair of CSIDC immensely. I
have made many friends. - I have been so busy that I forgot that tomorrow
is my 30th wedding anniversary whoops.
