4
Cancer Multi-Center Research Consortium
  • DEcIDE Developing Evidence to Inform Decisions
    about Effectiveness
  • Conduct accelerated practical studies about the
    outcomes, comparative clinical effectiveness,
safety, and appropriateness of health care items
    and services.
  • CMCRC
  • Affiliate Center UNC
  • Coordinating Center Brigham and Womens Hospital
    (Harvard Medical School)
  • Sebastian Schneeweiss, M.D. (PI)
  • Jane Weeks, MD
  • Deborah Schrag, MD

5
Cancer Multi-Center Research Consortium
  • As an Affiliate, UNC will
  • Conduct stakeholder-directed research on the
    safety, effectiveness, and appropriateness of
    diagnostic and therapeutic interventions in
    cancer
  • Assist stakeholders with developing,
prioritizing, and refining the research agenda
  • Provide clinical expertise to evaluate and refine
    research questions to ensure clinical
    meaningfulness and practical utility
  • Collaborate with BW to develop new data sources,
provide access to existing sources, assess data
quality, and address technical and methodological
    challenges

Cancer Multi-Center Research Consortium
Organizational Structure
7
Cancer Multi-Center Research Consortium
  • Task 1 Examining Colorectal Cancer and
Chemotherapy Choice in the United States
  • Comparative outcomes for treatment of advanced
    colorectal cancer

8
Cancer Multi-Center Research Consortium
  • Multiple, population-based data sets representing
multiple cancers in a broad spectrum of the U.S.
    population
  • Integrative analysis for broadest
    generalizability
  • Comparison to Clinical Trials

9
Impact
  • Immediate Task 1
  • Determine the degree to which consensus
guidelines for treatment of advanced colorectal
cancer (based on clinical trials results) are
    relevant for the general population.
  • Big Picture UNC Affiliate Center
  • Puts UNC at the table with Harvard and AHRQ in
directing the national research agenda for cancer
    comparative effectiveness, safety, and outcomes.
  • The promise of a long stream of future cancer
    research (and funding)

10
Acknowledgements
  • Grant Application Co-written by Carpenter and
Bryan J. Weiner, PhD Health Policy and
    Management
  • Contributors Team leaders
  • Anne Jackman, Patty Holloway, and others in Sheps
    Center Business Office
  • Mick Murray, Tim Carey, Til Stürmer

11
Linking North Carolina Central Cancer Registry to
Medicare Claims
  • Partnering with the North Carolina Central Cancer
Registry (NCCCR) and the Carolinas Center for
    Medical Excellence to
  • Develop, explicitly document, and operationalize
a replicable set of procedures for linking cancer
cases in the NCCCR to Medicare claims
  • Assess the strengths and limitations of this
linkage, and determine the degree to which it is
valid and adds value to the NCCCR
  • Demonstrate the linkages value by examining
treatment patterns and outcomes for advanced
colorectal cancer as they vary across North
    Carolina.

12
Linking North Carolina Central Cancer Registry to
Medicare Claims
  • Impact
  • Immediate
  • Allow examination of AHRQ study question in North
    Carolina
  • Examine differential diffusion of colorectal ca
innovations, patterns of care, and outcomes
  • Geographically, by race, gender
  • Big Picture
  • Develop a population-based research resource that
can be used for an array of cancer-focused
    epidemiological and health services research
  • (SEER-Medicare for North Carolina)
  • Simultaneously
  • Developing systems to link NCCCR with North
Carolina State Employees Health Plan claims
  • Insight for the under-studied pre-65 year old
    population
