HIV / AIDS
Statistics

2
Background Information
  • HIV Stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus.
  • HIV developes over time into its more severe form
of AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome)
  • The first case of HIV/AIDS in Canada was only
    discovered 20 years ago.
  • There is no Vaccine to prevent the disease.
  • There is no cure for HIV/AIDS

3
Statistics
  • At the end of 2002, Health Canada estimated there
were approximately 56,000 people in Canada living
with HIV (including those living with AIDS),
  • Approximately 17,000 or 30 were not aware that
    they were infected.
  • More than 25 million people have died of AIDS
    since 1981.
  • Africa has 12 million AIDS orphans.

4
  • Young people (under 25 years old) account for
half of all new HIV infections worldwide - around
6,000 become infected with HIV every day.
  • In developing and transitional countries, 7.1
million people are in immediate need of
life-saving AIDS drugs of these, only 2.015
million (28) are receiving the drugs.
  • At the end of 2006, women accounted for 48 of
all adults living with HIV worldwide, and for 59
    in sub-Saharan Africa.

5
The number of people living with HIV has risen
from around 8 million in 1990 to nearly 40
million today, and is still growing. Around 63
of people living with HIV are in sub-Saharan
Africa.
6
  • HIV/AIDS is transmitted a number of different
ways, it can be transmitted through
  • Unprotected sex
  • Sharing of needles or equipment for injecting
    drugs
  • Unsterilized needles for tattooing or piercing.
  • Breast feeding infants
  • Occupational exposure in health care settings

7
This pie graph shows the percentage of HIV/AIDS
cases in the world.
8
  • HIV works by slowly weakening the immune
system leaving the patient vulnerable to
infection. HIV normally takes about 10 years to
become AIDS. AIDS actually does not cause the
infected individual to die, the infections
contracted is what kills them. Therefore even a
common cold can be severely dangerous for those
    with AIDS.
