  mathematics, computer science and other
  disciplines
• studies on effectiveness of biologics, materials,
  processes, devices, procedures, and informatics

• advancement of existing imaging and
  bioengineering modalities, including imaging,
  biomaterials, and informatics
• development of target-specific agents to enhance
  images and identify/delineate disease

New Institute Status, 2/13/01

• legislation was signed on December 29, 2000 no
  appropriations in FY2001 for new institute
• BECON activities continue as current operative
  focus of bioengineering at NIH
• operating plan and implementation steps
  underway...

Current Activities

• developing mission statement
• obtaining DHHS approval to proceed with
  implementation of the statute
• seeking approval to transfer 1.975 million in FY
  2001 funds to the new Institute

• consultation with a wide range of groups
  representing biomedical imaging and
  bioengineering communities
• developing budget request for FY 2002 as part of
  overall NIH budget formulation

Near Future Activities

• Identification of already funded grants and
  activities appropriate for transfer to new
  Institute in FY 2002
• recruitment of permanent Director
• establishment of an Advisory Council and
  development of slate of members for appointment
  by new DHHS secretary
