3Data Sharing
- Over the past 10 years, the human genome
sequencing project and the Protein Data Bank have
clearly demonstrated the value of sharing data
among the research community. - Recognizing the value of sharing data, NIH
requires all awards over 500,000 to include a
data sharing plan as part of an application
(NOT-OD-03-032). - While text based data can usually be easily
shared from a centralized facility, the same is
not true of other biomedical research data
(imaging, microarray, )
4NIH Infrastructure to Facilitate Data Sharing
- Recognizing that complex biomedical research
data required a different model for sharing
(federated versus centralized) and that the best
strategy for sharing data was still an open
research question, NIH started two large data
sharing infrastructures BIRN (http//www.nbirn.n
et ) and caBIG (http//cabig.cancer.gov/index.asp
). - The two programs have some similarities and some
differences. Both are now available for use by
the biomedical research community.
5BIRN Builds on NSF Infrastructure
6BIRN is Being Developed at Many Sites
Morph BIRN Bruce Rosen Mass General
Mouse BIRN Arthur Toga UCLA
NDAR CIT/NIH
Function BIRN Steven Potkin UC Irvine
BIRN Coordinating Center Mark Ellisman UCSD
7BIRN Researchers
8The BIRN Infrastructure is now available
- We expect that there are roughly three different
groups that might be interested in the BIRN
Infrastructure - BIRN in a Box
- Collaborations that would make use of the tools
in developed under the current BIRN test beds. - BIRN Data Repository to Store and Share your
Imaging Based Datasets.
9Financial Resources
- Researchers who are interested in using the BIRN
or caBIG infrastructures to share their data have
two good options - CTSA Informatics Pilot Projects (NOT-RR-07-012)
-
- Tool and Data Sharing RFA
-
10More Information
- Technical assistance workshop October 18, 2007
on the NIH Campus for details see
http//www.nbirn.net -
- Discussions with the BIRN PIs or Project Managers
- Discussions with NIH staff (Elaine Collier or
Greg Farber or caBIG staff) -
