Great Britain Ireland
  • COPGBI financially sound. Discussions ongoing
    regarding best use/investment
  • Perfusion is the next discipline to be considered
    for HPC regulation
  • Unit accreditation programme progressing well
  • Discussions ongoing with NPSA regarding
    restriction of potassium use by perfusionists.

examination 18 November 2005
  • 12 candidates Southampton, Cardiff, Manchester
    (2), Liverpool (2) Wolverhampton (2), Sheffield,
    Middlesbrough, Papworth (2)
  • Vivas arranged to avoid bias (examiners did not
    test own trainees or SAs)
  • Written exam 6 out of 8 modified essay questions
  • Viva conducted in a uniform fashion (broadly
    similar questions for all)
  • 2 examiners marked each paper following advance
    guidelines
  • Written all candidates comfortably exceeded pass
    grade (60)
  • Viva all candidates acquitted themselves
    satisfactorily
  • 2 candidates excelled in both written and viva
    (diploma with distinction)
  • Comment training is getting better. Candidates
    with broad experience (in and out of theatre)
    tend to do better. Exam is well supported and
    will continue until the DoH/RCS SCP system is
    established.

  • This meeting has become a forum for British adult
    cardiac surgeons
  • to discuss more lab based studies
  • which more likely than not remain unpublished
  • There is little attraction for the other members
    of this society

Abstract Assessment Matrix
  • Impact. Score 1,2, 3 or 4. This reflects the
    relevance of the abstract to a clinical
    cardiothoracic surgical meeting. Work should have
    direct clinical relevance to score 3 or 4.
  • Originality. Score 0,1 or 2. Score 0 if the study
    repeats previous work, 1 if it extends previous
    work and 2 if it is completely original.
  • Design / Data Analysis. Score 1,2 or 3. In
    general a case control series would score 1 and a
    randomised trial 2. For laboratory work
    controlled experiments score 1 or 2. If the data
    analysis is clear, uses appropriate statistics
    and allows for confounding variables add 1.
  • Conclusion. Score 1 if the conclusions are
    clearly stated and supported by the results.
    Score 0 if this is not the case.
