Mycology
  • Mycology is The study of fungi.
  • Mycoses means the diseases caused by fungi.
  • Fungi are eukaryotic no photosynthetic organisms.
Mostly they, are nonmotile. Fungi play a key
factor in recycling the dead vegetation matter.
They also can destroy food, fabrics, and leather.
They can produce animal toxins and some are
parasites of plants. About 100 fungal species
    infect humans and cause disease.

Mycology (Contd)
  • A fungus is actually a primitive plant that is
found in air, in soil, on plants and in water.
Some common fungi include mushrooms, yeast, mold
    and mildew.

Morphological Classification
  • Yeast these are oval or round cells that
reproduce by budding e.g. candida and
    cryptococcus neoformans.
  • Filamentous fungi these are branching filaments
(hyphae) which may be separate or non-separate
    e.g. dermatophytes and Aspergillus.
  • Dimorphic fungi these occur in 2 forms a yeast
form in tissues or when grown at 37C and a
filamentous form when grown at 22C, e.g.
    Histoplasma, Blastomyces, Coccidioides.

6
Clinical Classification
  • Superficial mycoses like oral thrush and
vaginitis that caused by Candida albicans.
  • Cutaneous mycoses involve the skin, nail or
    hair.
  • e.g. dermatophtes, cutaneous candidiasis.
  • Systemic mycoses like lung infection that caused
    be Aspergillus fumigates.
  • Nabeel Al-Mawajdeh RN.MCS

7
Reproduction of Fungi
  • All fungi reproduce asexually by budding, asexual
spores, fission. Most fungi can reproduce
sexually by gametes haploid gametes fused to
form the zygote which give rise to a mature
    individual.
