  • Founded in 1673 as Apothecaries Garden
  • Train apprentices in plant identification
  • Location provided warmer microclimate

Historical Highlights
  • Initiated international botanic seed exchange
    system
  • Pond rock garden built. Included stones from
    Tower of London and Icelandic lava. Oldest rock
    garden in England open to public.
  • 1722-1770. Under gardener Phillip Miller became
    an outstanding botanic garden, known for its
    collection of American plants. Millers
    GardenersDictionary published--8editions in his
    lifetime.
  • 1765-1771. William Hudson published Flora
    Anglica, first book of British flora to use
    Linnaeus binomial nomenclature.
  • 1846 -1848 Robert Fortune made collecting trips
    to China, vastly increasing the number of species
    available to gardeners used Wardian cases to
    transport tea seedlings from China to India,
    establishing tea industry in India.
  • Started lecture course for young women training
    as botany teachers.
  • 1983 Became a registered charity and first
    opened to public.
