Stood on his tip-toes at the back of crowd in
the village hall, Doily listened intently for the
booming voice of King Boily. The gathering grew
larger and larger and soon Doily was not the only
one standing on their toes attempting to hear
what the King had to say. Finally he clambered
onto his large pile of books, so as to be seen by
all gnomes Wellermas you all know, he began
nervously ex-pharaoh Tutankhamen placed a curse
on Gnome Valley because hehe was afraid ofof
Gnomes. Consequently, every five years, terrible,
terrible disasters will take place here in our
village. The silence was ear splintering.
Already, Farmer Zoily has informed me that the
ground is rock hard and in no condition to grow
crops. Now, to lift this curse we need someone
prepared to risk their life to save this village.
They will have to follow this map of the Egyptian
deserts and destroy Tutankhamen's corpse with his
own sword to bring peace to this village once
again. Suddenly everyone began shouting out why
their to important to go. Doily was doing what he
was doing before he himself knew it. He pushed
aside the crowd, grabbed the map and yelled Ill
do it!
3Does Doily drop his head and regret his actions?
OR Does Doily hold his head high and begin the
journey?
4- At that moment there was an uproar of boos and
jeers from the onlookers. He couldnt make out
all the comments but some he could. - You couldnt squash a fly! You couldnt make
it through the desert! You dont stand a
chance!. - From behind him Doily saw the King rolling on his
back, choking with laughter. Younevereverhe
spluttered, gasping for breath lift the
curseno chance! - Doily fought back the tears pilling up in his
eyes. He wanted to help these selfish gnomes but
if they didnt appreciate it he wouldnt go. He
tarred the map in half, ran out of the hall and
began to cry as he sprinted home. - GO BACK!

Doily swallowed the embarrassment building up in
his throat. - Well your all to chicken to go, so I dont know
who youre laughing at? piped up Doily. He
turned to see if the King had recovered. King
Boily was swaying on his feet attempting to
steady himself. Very well then Doily. If you
succeed in lifting the curse I will give you ten
thousand Googons! (gnome money) butif you
dont you will leave Gnome Valley for ever and
never return! - He held out a stubby hand for Doily to shake.
Doily shook it. The King gave it a quick squeeze
as if afraid to touch it before hobbling out of
the back door. Doily could fell all the eyes on
the back of his neck. He squashed himself through
the crowd, out of the back doors and towards
home.
6- Once sitting alone in his Gnome Hole, Doily was
determined to prove all those gnomes wrong but on
the other hand he couldn't leave Gnome Valley. It
was his home. Right, he said to himself right.
I can do this. -
BUT COULD HE?
7- Does Doily stay at home after deciding that it
was to far for his little legs to go? - OR
- Does Doily pick himself up and give the adventure
a go?
8- After the embarrassing events at the Village Hall
Doily had locked himself in his Gnome Hole
refusing to open the door to anyone. After a week
of loneliness Doily pepped out of the window
only to see giant winds blowing sand all the way
down the street. Within hours the entire village
was covered in sand . Nobody could open their
house door to get food or even attempt to clear
the streets. After a week of wind and sand Gnome
Valley was no more - GO BACK!
9- Doily suddenly felt like such an idiot. How could
he have even, for one second, imagined leaving
his home to rot away under the curse. Doily
seized some of his oldest rags and a few chicken
wings before plunging them into the bottom of his
rucksack. He then scooped up Spindleshanks, his
pet chameleon, out of his cage and clambered out
of his Gnome Hole. Gnomes were still pushing and
shoving their way out of the hall. When they
spotted him some laughed and those nearest
stopped the conversation to point him out to
their friend. Doily turned away, slung his back
pack over his shoulder and set off towards the
end of the road, Spindleshanks gently changing
colour. - Once Doily had come to the end of the road,
he glanced up at the signpost. The hand pointing
left read Goilys Café and the other Desert.
Doily was tempted to grab a Cappuccino before
setting off but thought better off it. He turned
the corner and saw the landscape open up in front
off him. It was empty. There was nothing. Nothing
except miles and miles of sand as far as the eye
could see and the odd one or two palm trees. He
then took the map out of his rucksack and
unravelled the ribbon tied in a neat bow around
it so that it sprung open in his hands. It was an
old and shrivelled piece of parchment that gave
you the feeling that one wrong movement would
make it tear into millions of tiny pieces. After
a quick look at the map Doily saw that the
Pyramids were located on the other side of the
desert and that he would have to pass the
Swallowing Swamp, the Creepy Castle and the
gigantic Jungle.
