Selection of patients
  • Randomly selected from September 2000-December
    2002
  • Age range 20-98 years (mean 59 years)
  • Most between 63-83 years
  • No. of males 51 in total
  • No. of females 12 in total

Reasons why ISC was introduced
  • Residual volumes (RV)
  • Detrusor failure (DetFail)
  • Chronic retention (ChrRet)
  • Failed trial without catheter (TWOC)
  • Intermittent dilatation (ISD)
  • Other (include PRN for occasional retention 2
    pts, post UTI never voided)

  • PRN
  • Twice a week (2x wk)

Why did they stop?
  • IDC- clot retention, bladder stone, could not
    cope, was not happy, S/P cath for radiotherapy
  • Other- 2 died, 2 lost to f/u, 1 moved to Spain, 1
    refer to neurologist PRN, 1 ISD recurrent UTI

Tempted to give up
  • Yes- uncomfortable (2), painful (1), forget to do
    (5), did not like (1), could not cope (1), when
    operation is over (1), when passing urine better
    (1), no reason (5)
  • No- cant void, infection, always had problems

Offered alternatives
  • TWOC- all offered IDC
  • Chronic retentions- all wanted to get rid of IDC
  • ISD- did not want more surgery
  • Detrusor failures- wanted freedom ISC gives them
