2Project Summary
- The goal of this partnership between
pediatricians, dietitians, and the NC YMCAs is to
develop a low cost model for family focused
community-based childhood obesity
prevention/treatment programs. - If successful, this program could provide an
economically sustainable model for expansion to
other communities in North Carolina.
3YMCA Healthy, Fit, and Strong Program
- Pilot initiative in Goldsboro, Raleigh, Chapel
Hill, and Winston-Salem YMCAs - NC Pediatric Society Foundation will subcontract
with dietitians to provide nutrition education to
parents in each YMCA
4YMCA Healthy, Fit, and Strong Program
- YMCA will provide structured and supervised
physical activity to children - Pediatricians from private practice (Goldsboro
and Raleigh) and academic centers (Duke, UNC,
Wake Forest) will provide supervision of the
program - Data analysis by Wake Forest University School of
Medicine Public Health Sciences - Project Total- 69,600 for one year pilot study

8Families Eating Smart and Moving More Curriculum
- Nutrition sessions will take place once weekly
for 10 weeks and physical activity sessions 3
times weekly. Parents may participate in the
physical activity sessions with their child for
selected scheduled sessions. - Session 1 Measure and weigh children, parents
complete Diet and Activity Survey. - Session 2 Eat smart at home
- Session 3 Choosing more fruits and vegetables
- Session 4 Smart-size your portions and
right-size you - Session 5 Shop for value, check the facts
- Session 6 Eat smart on the run
- Session 7 Making smart choices when eating fast
food
