R1 Requirements
  • Should be under the direction of the Orthopaedic
    Residency Director
  • 6 Months of Core Surgery-
  • 2 months General Surgery
  • 4 months Systemic Trauma, Vascular, Burns, SICU
  • 3 Months Non orthopaedic elective
  • ED, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Peds Surgery, PMR,
    Rheumatology, MICU, CICU, MSK Radiology,
    Anesthesiology/ Pain
  • Months are 4 weeks or calendar month!

Problem
  • Transfers from non-orthipaedic R1 programs

Solution
  • Call ABOS and write a plan outlining the
    corrections for the R1 as soon as possible.
    Provide written corroboration of what rotations
    were done. Make the changes early and dont
    argue with interpretations. Notify ACGME as well
    about the changes.

  • 3 months General Surgery
  • 2 months Trauma Surgery
  • 1 month Plastic/Hand Surgery
  • 1 month ED
  • 2 months Cardiothoracic and ICU

  • 1 month Neurosurgery
  • 1 month Ortho

Good to Go?
  • No- This R1 did not perform SICU at Big State U,
    this needs to be addressed in a plan by the Big
    Blue Program Director.

Part I Passing Rate
  • 75 over a 5 year time
  • Not reviewed annually but at each RRC review

Feedback to Program Director
  • Each Program Director gets a summary of how their
    residents performed in the 18 Content Domains.
    This is to help with the teaching curriculum.

Application for Part I
  • This is the residents responsibility, have each
    R5 createan account online at abos.org October
    1.

Part I
  • Deadline for online application December 15, late
    deadline January 8. There are no exceptions to
    the deadline!

Part I Application
  • Program Directors receive 2 written notices- one
    with the summary of results from prior year part
    I and second early November, reminding them to
    have R5 residents make their applications.

Each Year 9 R5 Residents Fail to make the
Application Deadline. And, another 8 Do Not Show
Up for the Exam!

Success Rate
  • 1st Time US Residents 92 passing rate, those
    who miss the deadline or who skip the exam 90
    passing on the first examination.
