Influenza Vaccination

• Prevents influenza among residents and staff
• Limits transmission
• Prevents complications.

Case Definition

• Influenza-Like Illness (ILI)
• Fever greater then 100
• (Orally or Prostration)
• New cough or sore throat

Influenza Outbreak in a Long Term Care Facility

• Three cases of influenza-like illness within a
  1-week period
• One case of confirmed influenza is considered a
  suspected outbreak

Response To An Outbreak

• Confirmatory Testing
• Prophylaxis With Antiviral Medications
• Implement Droplet Precautions
• Isolation/Cohorting
• Surveillance
• Restrict Staff Movement
• Notify Visitors
• Limit New Admissions

Confirmatory Testing

• 3-5 residents with influenza-like illness (ILI)
  should be tested within 1-2 days of symptom onset
  by rapid diagnostic testing.
• The outbreak should be considered if one or more
  residents test positive.

Prophylaxis With Antiviral Medications

• PROPHYLAXIS should be administered to ALL
  residents, regardless of vaccine status.
• Continued for at least two weeks

Implement Droplet Precautions

• Surgical masks or procedure masks for five days
  after symptom onset
• Staff
• Residents

Isolation/Cohorting

• Confined to their rooms
• Cohorted on the affected unit
• Until treatment is completed
• Five days after onset of their illness

Surveillance

• Daily Active surveillance
• Residents
• Health-care Personnel

Restrict Staff Movement

•       Laundry
•       Therapy
•       Medical

• Etc.
