  • 1.1. Council of Industrial Research Associations
    of the Americas
  •  
  • In 1997 we founded this Council with the vision
    to enhance the cooperation between several
    associations from Canada to Argentina in order to
    create the American Area for sustainable growth
    of SMEs through innovation

  • 1.2. Foundation for interactions between
    enterprises and scientific sector FUNPRECIT,
    Argentina
  •  In 1982 we set up this Foundation with the
    vision to become a Business Development and
    Innovation Service Provider to enterprises. The
    main purpose is to provide enterprises with
    knowledge from the scientific sector and funds
    from the corresponding Agencies, either from
    Argentina or from abroad. The aim of our actions
    is to satisfy SMEs needs for knowledge and
    competitiveness.

  • 1.3. Argentine Agency for the Promotion of
    Science and Technology ANPCyT
    (www.agencia.secyt.gov.ar)
  •  In 1998 this Agency was founded with the vision
    to finance SMEs modernization, technology
    improvements and innovations. Three main
    Technology Modernization Programs have been
    signed between this Agency and the IADB.
  • The Mission is to promote research, technology
    and innovation of high quality projects in order
    to improve productive systems and services
    through financial support.

  • 2.1. MAIN ISSUES
  • Argentina and Latin America as a whole, devote
    less than 1 of their GDP (Gross Domestic
    Product) to Science and Technology.
  • By increasing industrial research and development
    contributions aim at increasing this percentage.
  • Since its foundation in 1982, FUNPRECIT has been
    devoted to foster the RD at enterprises with a
    strong interaction with research laboratories.
  • In this presentation, we offer a sample of
    industrial RD projects that have been proposed
    to the Argentine National Agency for the
    Promotion of Science and Technology (ANPCyT) and
    managed by FUNPRECIT as intermediary for their
    organization and formulation

  • 2.2. BEST PRACTICES TO BE ADDRESSED

  • Practices used by FUNPRECIT were the general ones
    as Business Development and Innovation Service
    Provider
  • a)      To get involved in the enterprise needs,
    to have a friendly dialog with managers and
    technicians, to know about technology needs and
    technology transfer and exploitation, in order to
    arrive to the correct proposal and project
    formulation.
  • b)      To be aware of - and explore financial
    offers from national and international agencies
    calls for proposals.
  • c)      To contact the appropriate RTD Center to
    get information and, eventually, knowledge and
    technology transfer or cooperation in the project
    development.
  • d)      To contact eventual partners, when
    necessary.
  • e)      To be aware of- the institutional ,
    economic and financial situation of each
    enterprise in order to match project budget and
    amount of subsidies and loans asked for.

  • 3.1. Biotechnology Dairy Enterprise Bio Sidus
    S.A.
  • Project Transgenic cloned calf
  • Transgenic animals may become a pharmaceutical
    laboratory. The transgenic cloned calf made by
    Bio Sidus will produce milk with growth hormone.
    The birth of the first cloned calf was in 2002,
    for the first time in Latin America.
  • Bio Sidus has been working on this endeavor since
    1996 and can now reap the benefits and share them
    with a large amount of patients.
  • This project was developed in conjunction with a
    Research Laboratory (INGEBI) belonging to the
    National Research Council.

  • Enterprise Síntesis Química S.A.
  • Project Research in pre inoculation of soybeans
    seed.
  • Abstract
  • Together with soy beans agricultural boom in
    Argentina (16 millions of 104 m²) the national
    production of inoculants has developed.
  • Research in pre inoculation of soy beans was
    carried out at Laboratory level, using different
    adhesives, fungicides and bradyrhizobium
    japonicums stub.
  • The project was so successful that the method is
    being applied in other laboratories and has high
    market demand.
  • This project was developed in conjunction with
    CINDEFI, a Research Laboratory belonging to the
    National Research Council and University of La
    Plata.

  • 3.3. Dye Chemistry Enterprise Vilmax S.A.
  • Project Production of new colorants at global
    competitiveness
  • The design, development and construction of an
    ultra filter plant in order to eliminate salts
    and liquid impurities before spray drying was the
    starting point in order to produce three new
    colorants at industrial scale. It should be
    pointed out that small amounts of cancerous
    amines were eliminated.
  • The project was successful and enjoys domestic
    and global market demand. This company is a
    leader in dye research, there is no matching
    local laboratory.

  • 3.4. New Biomaterials through Nano technology
    Development
  • Enterprise Therabel Pharma S.A.
  • Project Nanostructured materials for biomedical
    applications
  • Abstract
  • Research in new biomimetic materials applied to
    regenerative medicine in conjunction with tissue
    engineering was carried out. Medical applications
    to osseous and tissue regeneration are envisaged.
  • Know how and technology acquired so far will
    allow to start with a pre clinical stage in the
    application of new biomaterials.
  • This project was developed with the collaboration
    of School of Pharmacy and Biochemistry,
    University of Buenos Aires as well with CONICET
    (National Research Council)

  • 3.5. Information Technology applied to fare
    collection Enterprise Cedinsa S.A.
  • Project Design and Development of an automatic
    system for fare collect for public transport
  • Abstract
  • A hardware development for fare collection
    through magnetic cards and contactless cards has
    been done. The Projects first stage has been the
    development of Software for this equipment and
    for the Central Collection Office.
  • The second stage has been the development of a
    Satellite Global Positioning application. This
    development allows permanent fleet follow- up,
    fare calculation through routes and estimation of
    best frequencies.
  • The project was successful and enjoys domestic
    and global market demand.
  • This company is a leader in the development of an
    automatic system for fare collection and there is
    no matching local laboratory. We should point out
    that collaboration with University of Moron in
    software development was very helpful.

  • 3.6. Communications Technology
  • Enterprise INTEGRATECH S.A.
  • Project Design, development and manufacturing of
    Carrier Class SoftSwitch - class 4 5 -
  • (Carrier Class Switching) based on IP technology
    to replace old TDM Switches.
  • Abstract
  • The SSwitch is made with audio, data and video
    support with IP technology. This SSwitch will be
    used with a target market ranged from 500 to
    75000 subscribers.
  • Project development encompasses engineering
    developments, coding, tests, homologations and
    documentation.
  • This company is a leader in communication
    technologies - real time developments - and the
    collaboration of Universidad CAECE was deeply
    appreciated.

  • 3.7. Therapeutic neuro stimulation Enterprise
    Translab
  • Project Design and development of a therapeutic
    neuro stimulation device
  • Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) is a time-proven
    technique, with more than 30 years of use in
    movement disorder pathologies, such as
    Parkinsons disease.
  • The NE is a device which emits electrical
    impulses through an electrode implanted in a
    brain area so as to eliminate the symptoms of an
    ever growing range of pathological conditions.
  • The Project encompasses the development and
    manufacture of programmable devices with two
    different implant systems
  • a semi - implantable system, where the
    programming intelligence and the energy supply
    are located in an external unit with a small
    antenna which is coupled to the electrodes by
    means of a reception antenna implanted in the
    patients brain. The electrodes stimulate the
    targeted area in the brain which needs electrical
    impulses.
  • a fully implantable systems where the power
    supply and the lead or electrode are fully
    implanted in the patient.

  • 3.8. Production of composite materials
    Enterprise Darmex
  • Project Nano particles research for tires new
    material production, supported by numeric
    simulation
  • Physicochemical and thermo mechanical properties
    of a new elastomeric composite material are
    studied.
  • Inclusion of nano particles in this composite is
    the main innovation. This new material will be
    incorporated for tire production.
  • A family of composites may be produced with
    different physicochemical and thermo mechanical
    properties. A selected composite may be obtained
    prior to the experimentation.
  • This project is being developed in conjunction
    with a Research Laboratory (PRINSO) belonging to
    the National Research Council and CITEFA (Armed
    Forces Research Institute).
