1. Content of the Discover database
  • 2,500 multimedia objects mainly from the
    Alexander Turnbull Library
  • paintings, music paintings, photographs,
posters, video clips, music, essays and
bibliographies, created by New Zealanders and
    many reflect our Mäori heritage
  • arranged into a hierarchy of 50 topics that
support the school curriculum for the Visual Arts
    and Music disciplines

5
2. Context for its development
  • As pilot set criteria and standards for
  •    sustainability over time
  •    access for those with disabilities
  •   the ability to retain rights holdings and
    permissions
  •    create data that would be exchangeable across
    platforms
  •    create authenticated reproductions of original
  •    and create standards based metadata that would
    support administration, resource discovery and
    presentation activities.

6
3. Standards and best practice
  • The Discover Project used many well-known
standards as well as some new and emerging
    standards.
  • The Dublin Core Metadata Element Set (DCMES) is
used at the resource discovery level.
  • Best practice and recommendations are used
    especially for mapping and syntax.
  • Metadata Standards Framework for National Library
of New Zealand. National Library of New Zealand
Te Puna Matauranga o Aotearoa. (2000).

5. The Metadata
  • Discover required that the metadata support
  •      resource discovery - DCMES
  •      resource description - qualified DCMES
    EAD local elements
  •      and preservation, technical and
    administrative needs

5. The Metadatacontd
The schema uses DCMES and DCQ plus local
