School Improvement Overview
WISE (Ways to Improve School Effectiveness)
Tool Over the next two years Idaho is shifting
to a new school improvement planning tool called
the WISE Tool.   To facilitate a smooth
transition, submission for school improvement
plans has been extended to April 1, 2010. This
year only, schools and districts may choose to
submit plans in the CIP Tool, or in the WISE
Tool. The WISE Tool has many support features
built into the tool that provides schools and
districts with best practice research at their
finger-tips, linked to the areas used for
planning. A number of district and school sites
in Idaho have already begun to work in the WISE
Tool and are discovering all it has to offer.
14
School Improvement Overview
  • A Global Positioning System (GPS)
  • Shows where you are relative to your destination
  • Provides detailed routes for reaching it
  • Adjusts to variations and even accommodates
    diversions along the way
  • But the destination remains constant.
  • The WISE Tool works in much the same way, only
    for School Improvement.

15
School Improvement Overview
The Real Work Happens in the Teams
16
School Improvement Overview
  • Success Indicators
  • The Research Evidence of What Works in School
    Improvement
  • Evidence-based strategies for classrooms,
    schools, and districts
  • Culled, analyzed, and organized in Handbook on
    Restructuring and Successful School Improvement
  • Handbook named "outstanding publication of the
year" by Division H of AERA at 2008 convention in
    New York City
  • Organization of Success Indicators
  • Improving the Performance of
  • The District.
  • The School.
  • The Classroom.
  • And Ultimately . . . The Student.

17
School Improvement Overview
  • Assess, Plan, Monitor Success Indicators
  • Self Assessment and the First Step Toward
    Improvement
  • If the Team Identifies the Success Indicator as a
    Priority
  • Then the WISE Tool turns it into an action item,
and objective to be defined and accomplished
  • Teams then Plan, Implement, and Continually
    Monitor
  • Sorting Reporting Features

18
School Improvement Overview
  • WISE Reference Tools and Resources
  • Wise Ways is a Built-in Reference Tool that
    Provides
  • A Synthesis of the Research that Supports the
    Indicator
  • Written Video Examples
  • Real, How-to, High-leverage Strategies for
    Attaining It
  • Coaching Comments Makes it Easy and Automatic for
Teams to Communicate with their Coaches,
    Instructors, and/or outside consultants
