Overview
  • Introduction
  • Problem Statement
  • Background Information
  • Product Design Specifications
  • Design Alternatives
  • Future Work Ideas

4
Problem Statement
  • The purpose of this project is to improve a
device that will measure the size of an
esophageal stricture and compliance of stricture
    tissue.

5
Background Information
  • GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease)
  • Acid burns tissue and causes strictures
  • Symptoms heartburn, food sticking sensation
  • Narrowing of esophagus (25mm to 2-15mm)

6
Dilation Procedure
  • Balloon technique
  • Uses endoscope and catheter
  • Uses pressurized gun
  • Takes about 20 minutes

7
Design from Previous Semester
  • Two-syringe inflation system
  • Displays pressure volume readings
  • Can determine compliance
  • Not yet tested

8
Product Design Specifications
  • Device must be simple to use
  • Results must be easy to understand
  • To be used multiple times a day
  • Easy to incorporate into procedure room
  • No added time, complications, or costs to
    procedure

9
One-Syringe Design
  • Replace two syringes with single syringe
  • Adaptor for 2 sensors and balloon catheter
  • Advantage More compact, simpler, increased
    stability
  • Disadvantage Use air or water?

10
Crank System
  • Improved way to steadily depress syringes
  • Steady, constant force applied to syringes
  • Less force required/easier to manually compress
    handle
  • Disadvantage Counter-top required, not hand-held

11
Air-Pump System
  • Design hand-held pump-system, similar to
    blood-pressure cuff inflator
  • Easier to inflate, than using syringes
  • Pump attaches to sensors for volume pressure
    measurements

12
Gun With Adaptor
  • Reverts back to original gun inflation system
  • Air inflation
  • Adaptor to connect sensors and balloon to gun tip

13
Design Evaluation
Design Matrix
5 is the highest rating
14
Future Work
  • Choose design to pursue
  • Collaborate with other team members
  • Research more accurate sensors
  • Modify and test prototype
