6The Program
- The Liberal Studies Program is different from
other majors because a Liberal Studies major does
not take - The General Education requirements in the
catalog. These requirements are built into the
Liberal Studies Program. - Anything NOT listed on the outline, unless you
need additional units for graduation.

- Freshman and Transfers
- Be sure turn in your immunization records to the
Health Center to avoid future holds. - Need fingerprints with a certification of
clearance from the state. - Also need a current TB clearance.
- These are necessary to be able to do any field
placement or be in any classroom.
8Credential-Track Programs
- Traditional Track
- Want to become elementary school teacher
- Plan on completing major prior to credentialing

- IBBEST
- This program combines BA courses with credential
courses, offering an integrated program of study.
- Students graduate with a BA in Liberal Studies
and a Level I Preliminary Multiple Subjects
Credential.

- ISPED
- Combines BA courses with special education
credential courses. - This allows students to receive a BA in Liberal
Studies and a Preliminary Education Specialist
Credential in Mild to Moderate Disabilities.

- BCLAD
- BCLAD teachers plan to instruct primarily
elementary students who are second language
learners. - In this sub-track, the student takes a number of
courses in Spanish rather than English.
12Subject Matter Authorizations
- Liberal Studies offers students the opportunity
to obtain a Subject Matter Authorization in three
areas - Mathematics
- English
- Science
- These Subject Matter Authorizations will allow
students to teach Middle School being qualified
to teach in grades 6-9.
13Non-Credential Track
- Liberal Studies includes a small number of
individuals who are simply seeking a broad-based
college degree. - This major track includes General Education
courses, and range of courses in various areas in
arts and sciences.
14Concentration Outlines
- Take one course for each letter in your outline
- Do not take anything that is not on the outline
without the written permission of the Department
Chair! If you think you have taken an equivalent
course somewhere, ask an advisor and submit a
substitution request!

18Visual and Performing Arts
- Student must take one courses in each of the
following areas art, music, and theatre. - One of these may be a lower division introduction
to art, music, or theatre course. - Two of these must deal with the use of art,
music, or theatre in the elementary classroom. - One of the three courses must be upper division.

21Foreign Language
- Students at CSUB must have satisfied the CSU
foreign language graduation requirement. - This can be done by taking two years of the same
language in high school, passing an exam, or by
taking one term or one quarter of a foreign
language at a community college or a four-year
institution of higher learning in order to
graduate.
22Area of Concentration Area 12
- The concentration requires the completion of four
(4) related courses, one of which may be doubled
counted elsewhere in the major. - All courses must be completed with a grade of C
or higher. - The minimum number of units required is 18
quarter units. - See Liberal Studies concentration

23Examinations
- Currently, students are required to pass the
CBEST exam before or during the first phase of
their Education Program (PPP). - Teacher candidates are also required to pass the
CSET exam, multiple subjects, before they enter
the education program.
- It is recommended that students take the CBEST
after their Sophomore year, and CSET after their
Junior year.
24Examinations and GPA
- Within the CSU system a 2.67 GPA or higher is
required for admission to a professional program. - While there are exceptions to this rule, you
dont want to have to apply for an exception. - KEEP YOUR GRADES UP!!!
25Preregistration and Advising
- The Liberal Studies Program is a very popular,
major with . To get the classes you need to
complete your degree, you should preregister as
soon as you are authorized to do this. In
addition, you should schedule an appointment with
an advisor at least once a quarter in order to
monitor and update your progress.
