Proper Disposal of Automotive Waste Products
  • Mitch Clingman
  • Corey Comero
  • Heather Jahnke
  • Chris Milbrandt
  • Sara Schwalbe

3
Topics to be Discussed
  • Discuss automotive wastes
  • Types of materials in the category
  • How you safely dispose of it
  • What happens when properly disposed of
  • When it is harmful
  • Alternatives exist to product lists
  • How Winona handles these wastes

4
EPA Class of Household Wastes
  • Automotive Products
  • Cleaning Products
  • Workshop/Painting Supplies
  • Indoor Pesticides
  • Garden Supplies

5
Types of Materials in Automotive Waste
  • Motor oil
  • Fuel additives
  • Carburetor and fuel
  • Injection cleaners
  • Air conditioning refrigerants
  • Starter fluids
  • Automotive batteries
  • Transmission and brake fluid
  • Antifreeze

6
USED MOTOR OIL
  • Used oil from a single oil change (approx. one
gallon) can ruin a million gallons of fresh water
    - a year's supply for 50 people.
  • An estimated 200 million gallons of used motor
oil is improperly disposed of each year in the
U.S. by being dumped on the ground, tossed in the
trash (ending up in landfills), and poured down
    storm sewers and drains.

TIRES
  • Approximately one tire is discarded per person
    each year
  • Scrap tires waste landfill space, and damage the
linings that keep groundwater from mixing with
    land-filled contaminants
  • Burning tires leads to toxic smoke and oil into
    nearby areas of water
  • Tires are recycled for shoes, belts, playground
equipment or even re-treaded into new tires

10
How do you safely dispose of it?
  • Uncontaminated oil
  • Contaminated oil
  • Antifreeze
  • All other liquids
  • Batteries
  • Tires
  • Old vehicles
  • Recycled _at_ no cost
  • MRW Collection Facility
  • MRW Collection Facility
  • MRW Collection Facility
  • Drop box facilities
  • Transfer Stations
  • Recycled for making cement
  • Tow company to junkyard

Winona County HHW Facility accepts auto wastes
such as antifreeze, Brake fluid, transmission
fluid, used motor oil, and used oil
filters. Underdahl Chevrolet, Inc. accepts
used motor oil and oil filters
11
What happens to the waste when disposed?
  • Vehicle towed, this is the only waste that costs
    money
  • All the rest are either recycled or disposed of
    at no cost
  • Some items are either recycled into other things,
such as tires, which are recycled for making
    cement

12
Harmful or not?
  • Motor oil flammable, toxic
  • Carburetor and fuel flammable, toxic
  • Automotive batteries corrosive, irritant
  • Transmission and brake fluid flammable, toxic
  • Antifreeze - toxic

13
SUPRISES
  • Heavy metals get into oil, which contaminates
soil causing health hazards to both wildlife and
    humans
  • Antifreeze is toxic to animals and they are
attracted to it from its sweet taste

14
Alternatives to product lists
  • Reusable items
  • Biodegradable parts
  • Antifreeze use propylene glycol-based because
    its less toxic
  • Batteries purchase longer life batteries
  • Gasoline E-85

15
How Winona handles these wastes
  • The MPCA works with Minnesota industries, local
government, and citizens to find innovative ways
to prevent pollution and reduce waste.
  • Winona County Household Hazardous Waste Facility
takes used motor oil as well as other automotive
    fluids at no cost.

16
