2Standard Paper Sales is proud to present the
GREEN PAGES cleaning manual. With the
increasing awareness of environmental issues, we
are in position to offer a complete line of
products that are safer for the indoor AND
outdoor environments.
Green cleaning is defined as cleaning for
health without harming the environment. It is not
simply about using green products but an entire
process of cleaning and maintaining a facility.
To begin a Green Cleaning program, the whole
process of cleaning must be examined with
emphasis on techniques, products and methods that
make the indoor environment healthier and at the
same time have minimal environmental impact.
The goal of Green cleaning is to remove
contaminants on a regular basis and to do so in a
way that does not harm the indoor air or the
environment. While some regular cleaning products
and maintenance methods may produce the desired
results, they do so by adding harmful by products
into the air or on the surfaces where they are
used. .
3 The Need for Green Cleaning Did You
Know? The need for green cleaning makes sense
when you consider that Americans spend 90 of
their time indoors and most pollutants in
buildings are brought in from outside and spread
throughout. A green program can have a positive
impact on the annual maintenance of the buildings
where we work and live.
- Contact us for more information
- The Environmental Protection Agency(EPA) ranks
indoor air pollution among the top five
environmental risks in public health.
- The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and
Immunology estimates that more than 50 million
people in the U.S. suffer from allergic
diseases, costing the health care system 18
billion annually.
- The Surgeon General reported that 20 million
Americans have asthma. That is 3 times as many
as there were 25 years ago.
4What are the benefits?
- Cleaner indoor air can result in reduced
absenteeism, an increased productivity.
- Healthier indoor environment helps improve
morale, reduces turnover and can help recruitment
of new personnel.
- Better cleaning procedures and safer cleaning
products can help lower healthcare costs and
insurance costs.
- Government buildings and schools gain
compliance with new and emerging regulations.
- Green cleaning helps extend the life of
carpets, flooring, furnishing computers, HVAC
systems, etc.
- Using less paper products, chemical management
systems and recycling efforts have multiple
positive impacts.
5Begin with a Shade of Green
A Shade of Green is basically a measuring tool
for your commitment to sustainability. The bigger
role you play, the darker green you become. This
information will help you determine what shade
you currently are and what you can do to become
even greener.
Our green cleaning program encompasses all indoor
activities typically required to clean
commercial, public and industrial buildings.
6Shades of Green
- A. Efficient Use of Chemicals
-
- Usage tracking chemical usage within the
facility must be tracked and recorded quarterly. - Chemical dilution Provide instructions and/or
use a chemical station - Waste Reduction Use of systems that help reduce
chemical waste. - Empty Container Disposal Provide directions for
disposal of empty containers - Conduct cleaning activities in a manner so that
other building areas are not adversely affected. - Low impact Cleaning Methods Systems(methods)
that reduces or minimize chemical usage(i.e.
microfiber cleaning, travel stations, foaming
carpet spotting kits)
7Shades of Green
B. Entryways Specific attention is required for
entryways as this is the means by which dirt
enters a building. The SOP should address daily
cleaning procedures, matting placement at all
entries and a method of mat maintenance. C.
Floor Care Hard Woods A complete hard floor
care program should be documented and include
daily, periodic and restorative maintenance
procedures and their frequency. D. Floor Care
Carpet A complete carpet care program should be
documented that includes a schedule for
vacuuming, spotting and restorative cleaning.
8Shades of Green
E. Disinfection A protocol for disinfection use
that uses only EPA registered products. Specific
procedures outlining preparation of solutions,
proper use dwell time necessary. F. Restroom A
documented procedure for restroom cleaning
designed to keep restrooms in a clean and
sanitary condition. G. Dining Break Rooms A
procedure for cleaning food preparation and
consumption areas. H. Trash Collection
Recycling A protocol for collection and disposal
of trash and general recycling guidelines and
policies.

I. Communications The cleaning service provider
must have a communication strategy with regard to
cleaning personnel and facility managers that
encompasses the following items.
1 Training Materials Employees should be
provided with training manuals, videos and other
training materials on chemical information and
green cleaning procedures in appropriate language
and graphics. 2. Feedback A system should be in
place to allow employees to provide comments and
suggestions about workplace issues and
suggestions for improvement. Also, an occupant
survey will be provided to building management to
provide feedback on performance of cleaning
operations. Communicate to management of the
building the presence of pests and any
maintenance issues discovered while performing
cleaning operations. 3. Cleaning Chemical
Inventory A list of all cleaning chemicals used
in the building shall be provided to building
management and be available upon request. It will
include a contact person that is responsible for
maintaining as MSDS file on the products used.
10Cleaning Chemicals
Standard Paper is committed to a cleaner, greener
environment that is more healthful for workers,
tenants and custodians. We recognize the true
purpose of cleaning and that is for sanitation of
the built environment and ultimately to protect
man and maintain human health. Spartans Green
Solutions and BioRenewable lines contain all
the cleaning chemicals needed for the everyday
maintenance of a building.
11Cleaning Chemicals
The Green Solutions line was created with current
and future global environmental concerns in mind.
It is the pro-active choice for the professional
who is selecting cleaners for institutional and
industrial use in the sanitary maintenance
industry.
- No persistent bioaccumulative or toxic
chemicals.
- No ozone depleting compounds
- No or low volatile organic compound content
- No hazardous waste characteristics
- No phosphates or phosphonates
- No carcinogens, mutagens or teratogens
12Cleaning Chemicals
Biobased products are defined as commercial or
industrial products that are composed, in whole
or significant part, of biological products or
renewable domestic agricultural materials or
forestry materials. Therefore, industrial raw
materials, such as surfactants and solvents are
now being produced from renewable plant or animal
resources, which are typically biodegradable,
friendlier to the environment and supportive of
the agricultural industry.

14Cleaning Equipment and Tools
Benefits of MICROFIBER useAlthough many
departments can benefit from microfiber, health
care facilities have been quick to embrace this
newer technology. In an effort to reduce cross
contamination between patient rooms, some state
laws require that housekeeping departments
change out the mop and/or chemicals and water
after every room. Using microfiber flat mops,
this requirement isnt difficult to meet.
15Supplies
A non chemical cleaning supply can be considered
environmentally preferable if it meets the
following criteria - Meets minimum recovered
content as designated by the U. S. EPAs
Comprehensive Procurement Guidelines - Paper
products have not been bleached by chlorine or
derivatives of chlorine - Plastic products are
made of PVC free materials.
(items like trash liners, general purpose wipes,
office recycling or trash containers, or floor
mats)
16Supplies
- Manual cleaning equipment can be considered
environmentally preferable if it meets at least
one of the following - uses at least 50 wood certified from
sustainable sources - uses at least 25 post consumer recycled
plastics or biodegradable plastic substitutes. - uses at least 50 organically grown material
- uses at least 25 reclaimed, reused or post
consumer recycled material
(items like brooms, wet/dry mops, brushes,
buckets, dustpans, toilet plungers, window
squeegees, scrapers, ladders, carts/totes, spray
bottles, signage and others)
17Entrance Matting
Soil is everywhere. It is a part of the earth we
live on and managing it is a vital part of our
everyday existence. The U.S. Green Building
Council has developed a rating system for new and
existing buildings to encourage building owners
to earn credit for meeting certain housekeeping
criteria. Strategies include the creation and
maintenance of entrance systems and mats that
prevent particles from entering the building.
Recommendations include a minimum of 10-12 feet
of quality matting products at entrances.
At the heart of an entrance system is prevention
of contaminants from entering a building. 85 of
all soil enters a building on the feet of people
entering the building. Of this, at least 80 is
dry soil and the rest is oily. The dry soil can
range from large particles to powder-like dust.
Over the years, many products have been developed
and sold to help keep soil at the door and out
of the building. The key to the success of a
mats performance is whether it will do what an
entrance mat should do.

19Trash Liners
It is true that actual recycled
products(products used again after being
recaptured from the waste stream) can be
environmentally friendly. However, many repro
can liners today have little or no levels of true
PCR and a high level of reclaimed scrap(resin
made from in-plant scrap). Also, the first step
in the Environmental Protections Agencys solid
waste management is source reduction, which
includes promoting practices that reduce waste
before it is generated as well as reducing the
amount of material being put back into the waste
stream. A repro can liner that is 2 mils thick
uses twice the amount of material to make the
product, and sends twice as much plastic back
into the waste stream(and potentially to
landfills) than a 1 mil Heritage liner made with
prime resin! Heritage Bag has been awarded a
Superior rating by the Environmentally
Preferred Rating (EPR) program of the California
Film Extruders and Converters Association
(CFECA), announced Pete Grande, CFECA president.
Heritage Bag, based in Carrollton, Texas, is one
of the first companies in the industry to achieve
such accreditation, certifying that it maintains
environmentally sensitive production facilities.
20Trash Liners
Why are we developing BioTuf? Over the past 40
years, the Environmental Protection Agency
reports that there is four times as much trash
generated in the US, yet there are only
one-fourth of the amount of landfills available.
We believe that the process of turning organic
trash into compost, or composting will become a
significant future trend in how the U.S. manages
its almost 230 million tons of Municipal Solid
Waste. One of the key elements in managing this
process is to have trash bags available that meet
ASTM standards for biodegradable/compostability...
so that the bags used for trash collection can
turn into compost along with the rest of the
organic trash in an actively managed compost
facility.
