America the Preferred Destination for Taiwan

  • Steadily diminished to about 41 in 2002, but
still about 50 higher than the second-ranked
destination, the UK. US-bound students doubled
    from 1988 to 2002 (6,382 to 13,767)
  • The US is the overwhelming choice for
post-graduate degree programs. We are losing
ground in English language and other non-degree
    programs.
  • US student visas for Taiwan applicants peaked in
2000 and have declined since. Why? Cost.
    Security concerns. (Mis)perceptions that student
visas are hard to come by post-911. Marketing by
competitors (UK). The growing allure of China
  • Non-traditional students seeking short-term study
average over 4,000 per year. Arrangements are
    usually made by travel agencies
