CoE Rackham
UM CoE

• The CoE and Rackham provide some funds to the
  department entering Ph.D. students
• Generally this funding is for the first year
• Take course
• Qualifying examination
• Find Advisor and topic or topic and advisor
• Identify future support
• Funding for subsequent years is from other
  sources often to be determined
• Various restrictions based on citizenship, gender
  and race

UM CoE

• Awards are typically based on
• Academic merit (Undergraduate institution,
  program, grades, GRE, letters, goal statement,
  other)
• Number and quality of applicants (competitive)
• Available resources (available faculty advisor,
  likelihood of future funding)
• All Ph.D. applicants are automatically considered

• Generally for bridging and cost sharing
• Very limited

Endowments
UM CoE

• These are result of a gift to a unit within the
  College
• The criteria for selecting students is typically
  negotiated between the donor and the University
• IOE is presently negotiating an endowment that
  will pay a stipend only for Ph.D. students in
  Operations Research after their first year
• Check with your department to see if they have
  anything available

Special initiatives (IOE)
UM CoE

• GAANN (Graduate Assistance in Areas of National
  Need) Emphasizes under represented minorities,
  but other considered also. Based on financial
  need.
• STIET (Socio-Technical Infrastructure for
  Electronic Transactions) Business IT
  applications.
• Sloan Fellowships -- Under represented minorities
• Training grants
• IOE NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational
  Safety and Health) Tuition support for MS and PhD
  students studying Occupational Safety and Health.
  Specific course requirements.

• First or second year
• 3 years of support
• US citizens only
• Howard Hughes
• Biological sciences
• Student applies directly to Howard Hughes
• 5 years support
• This grants go with the student from advisor to
  advisor and institution to institution

GSRAs
UM CoE

• Graduate Student Research Assistant
• Provides income, tuition and benefits (appts ?
  25)
• Administered through individual faculty members
• Grants to faculty members are highly competitive
  and require the faculty member to delivery a
  research product
• The faculty members career can be affected by
  the outcome of the grant
• It is a big commitment for the faculty member
• Supporting a GSRA costs about 50,000/yr plus
  overhead

  study, etc.
• Look for match between work and dissertation area
• Flexibility
• In some cases you may be able to work with
  faculty on grant proposal

• Try to find a class with your primary advisor
• Administered through department
• May be opportunities for MS students

General Advice
UM CoE

• Study the active research areas in the department
  and craft your personal goal statement to related
  it
• Prior and current academic performance is
  important
• Get to know the faculty through classes, directed
  study and lab work
• Look for a match between research interest,
  faculty and funding
• Be flexible, but dont keep switching areas
• Investigate all funding sources
