High School
The Great Mills High School STEM Academy will
offer unique courses in Science, Technology,
Engineering, and Mathematics, giving students
extraordinary knowledge and skills, as well as
career exploration in numerous science and
engineering pathways. The curricula will include
dedicated research classes founded upon the
application of mastered material, integrated
contemporary technologies, and extensive
problem-solving experience.

What will classes look like?
  • Two cohort STEM groups of ninth grade students
  • Class size will not exceed 24 students
  • Cohort and peer group of highly able, highly
    motivated ninth grade learners with demonstrated
    skill, learning potential, and interest

Daily Schedule
  • 90 Minutes of daily, in depth, Advanced Chemistry
    and Algebra II Honors curriculum delivered in a
    co-taught environment with a great deal of
    personalized interaction with students
  • 45 minutes of English 9 Honors
  • 45 minutes of U.S. History
  • 45 minutes of World Language
  • 45 minutes of PE /Health
  • 45 minutes for a fine arts elective

Transportation
  • Bus transportation will be provided at designated
    hubs for all students enrolled at the STEM
    Academy

Application Timeline
  • Students complete an application packet and
    submit this electronically on the SMCPS website
    (Deadline March 20, 2009).
  • Each application will be reviewed by an
    admissions team comprised of supervisors,
    directors who, in turn, make recommendations to
    the academy for accepting members into the
    program.

Application Timeline
  • Students will receive notification of their
    status (accepted, wait listed, not accepted) by
    May 1, 2009.
  • Students complete transfer requests/commitment
    letters due to our office by June 1, 2009.
