Academy Goals

• To teach basic knowledge of health care
  terminology
• To give an understanding of hospital procedures
• To provide instruction in providing care and
  assistance to patients

• To provide knowledge of specific skills required
  to pass the Certified Nurse Assistant Examination
• To provide information about nursing and other
  health-related professions
• To give opportunities for personal career
  evaluation

Academy Progression

• Fall 2003
• Recruitment of qualified participants from
  Meridian High School and Meridian WIA program
• Conducted personal interviews
• Collected written essays
• Selection of 20 eligible participants

Academy Progression

• January 2004
• Two 7-week class sessions began with RN
  Instructor at Rush Foundation Hospital
• 10 students per session
• Met after school
• Two days per week for class activities, job
  shadowing, life skills
• training, and work experience

• GRADUATION!!!
• All 20 Academy participants successfully
  completed Mentorship Academy requirements
• Graduation luncheon and certificate of completion
  presentation

Certified Nurse Assistant Program

• GOALS
• At least 15 students will complete Certified
  Nurse Assistant (CNA) program
• At least 8 students will become CNAs

Certified Nurse Assistant Program

• June 2004
• Partnership with Meridian Community College began
• 18 Academy graduates began 80-hour CNA program
• All 18 students completed CNA coursework and
  clinical hours

• CNA Program Completed!
• Pinning Ceremony Co-sponsored by ONW and Rush
  Foundation Hospital
• All 18 Students successfully completed CNA
  coursework

Progress To-Date

• 16 students sat for CNA examination
• All 16 students passed written examination
• 13 students passed both written and skills
  examinations and are Certified Nurse Assistants

Future of the Mentorship Program

• At least three new mentorship sites will be added
  by June 2005
• At least one mentorship site will be in each of
  the four WIA districts
• Twin Districts Planning and Development District
