Flexible Bronchoscopy
  • Flexible bronchoscopy is a procedure used to
examine the tracheobronchial tree in order to
inspect the secretions, obtain specimens to
detect windpipe and bronchial tubes, remove
airway infections and other illnesses, or treat
    patients with airway obstruction.
  • Procedures are performed in the outpatient
procedure suite using topical anesthesia and
    intravenous sedation.

Before the Procedure
  • Before the procedure, you will be asked to wear a
    hospital gown.
  • An intravenous catheter will be inserted.
  • Inform the nurse of any allergies you may have,
  • and which medications you are taking.
  • Bring a list of your current medications with
    dosages.

10
During the Procedure
  • During the procedure, monitors will be placed to
  • measure your blood pressure, heart rate, and
  • oxygen saturation.
  • Sedation Medication (Midazalom/Versed) will be
    administered intravenously to make you
    comfortable for the procedure.
  • A topical anesthetic (Lidocaine) will be applied
into your nostrils and spritzed into the back of
your throat. This may give you the sensation
that it is hard to swallow or that you have a
    lump in your throat.

11
The Bronchoscopy
  • An oxygen catheter or mask will then be placed
on your nose or mouth. The physician will gently
insert the flexible bronchoscope into your
nostril or mouth, after which additional
    anesthetic will be administered.

12
Relax!
  • Although you may cough or feel a temporary
choking sensation, you will always be able to
    breathe comfortably.
  • Someone will be at your side at all times
explaining each step of the procedure.
  • Occasionally, brushing or biopsy specimens are
    taken for microscopic examination.
  • Dont worry, you will not feel any pain or
    discomfort when this is done.
  • Procedures take about 30 minutes to complete.

13
After the Procedure
  • After the procedure, you will recuperate in the
procedure room or Post Anesthesia Care Unit
(PACU) until fully awake, alert, and clinically
    stable.
  • You will be wearing an oxygen mask over your nose
    and mouth.
  • The monitors will be on your arm and finger.
  • You may need a chest radiograph or bronchodilator
    breathing treatment.
  • You should not eat or drink anything for at least
two hours after the procedure because your throat
and vocal cords have been anesthetized.

14
Discharge
  • Discharge from the hospital or procedural area
will occur when you are stable and feeling well.
  • Again, for your safety and as required by state
law, you must have someone drive you home.
  • Results and recommendations from the bronchoscopy
will be mailed or faxed to you, your referring
    and primary care physicians.
  • We will call you for a follow-up appointment if
    further care is necessary.
