Beyond Fundraising
  • Fundraising is designed to raise money for an
annual budget drive or a capital campaign.
  • Stewardship is the growing, nurturing, promoting,
and building of gifts, call, and spiritual
    vocation.
  • Good stewardship involves raising money, but
raising money must be nestled under the umbrella
    of congregational mission.

7

  • Integration / assimilation
  • Annual budget drive / annual canvass
  • Visiting stewards / canvassers
  • Stewardship conversations / home visits
  • Orientation workshop / training
  • Program spaces / classrooms

  • Belief in mission
  • Because someone asks
  • Others?

10
Appreciative Inquiry
  • A faith community is not a problem to be fixed
but a mystery to be embraced.
  • David L. Cooperrider
  • While traditional problem solving separates,
dissects, and pries apart, AI generates affirming
    images that pull people together.
  • Wayne B. Clark

11
Appreciative Questions
  • When you think back to your beginnings with this
congregation, what first attracted you? What were
your most positive and powerful first
    impressions?
  • 2. What is currently going well in our
congregation? How can we build upon these
    strengths?

12
More Appreciative Questions
  • 3. Describe a time when you were proud to be
part of this congregation. What was the
highpoint? What did it feel like? What was your
    contribution?
  • 4. When you have been involved in an effective,
    inclusive decision-making process in this
congregation, what have you most valued about
that process? What have you valued about the way
people related to one another? How did
    participation improve the decisions?

13
. . . And Still More
  • 5. Imagine the future. Your congregation respects
and celebrates diversity. What do meetings look
like? What does it feel like when you walk
    through the building?
  • 6. When have you been a part of this congregation
when they did something positive for the
environment? Who was involved? What do you
appreciate most about these people and their work?
