1. Reasons for Incorporating SC Lessons into
Online Courses
  • To help students become active rather than
    passive learners
  • To increase retention (hopefully) in online
    courses
  • To meet Quality Matters Standards for online
    instruction
  • see http//qualitymatters.org for details

4
  • . . . is a faculty-centered, peer review process
designed to certify the quality of online courses
    and online components.
  • Courses that pass the Peer Review process can use
the QM logo in the course as a way to market it.
  • The DCCCD adopted QM Standards in 2006 as the
District standard for online course development.

5
NUTR 1322 passed QM review in July 2007
PHED 1164 passed QM review in December 2007

2. Examples of SC Activities in Two Online
Courses
  • We'll go to eCampus (http//ecampus.dcccd.edu
/ ) to look at how you can use SC to deliver
    course content including publisher ancillary
    materials and interactive SC activities
  • In NUTR 1322 a Chapter Review.
  • In PHED 1164 an interactive SAMPLE Workout Log

18
Students were overwhelmed when they saw the
SAMPLE Log in my Fitness course!
19
The interactive SAMPLE Log shows students how to
successfully complete a weekly Workout Log - one
step at a time.
20
Instructions direct students to either explore
the images on the next 5 pages or view a video
(captured with SnagIt).
21
The SAMPLE Log was clipped in sections (using
Adobe Photoshop) to create HotSpot activities
with descriptive textpoppers.
22
On last page, student completes a Matching Quiz
to assess knowledge.
23
If 100 correct, student earns 10 points. When
student presses the Quit Lesson and Submit
Score button, points are sent to gradebook.
24
SAMPLE Log points appear in the gradebook.
