  • The National Council for Accreditation of Teacher
    Education (NCATE) and
  • the Interstate New Teacher Assessment and
    Support Consortium (INTASC) expect teacher
    candidates to demonstrate knowledge, skills, and
    dispositions to provide learning opportunities
    that support students development.

  • Dispositions are the values, commitments, and
    professional ethics that influence behaviors
    toward students, families, colleagues, and
    communities

    development as well as the educators own
    professional growth.

  • Dispositions are guided by beliefs and attitudes
    related to values such as caring, fairness,
    honesty, responsibility, and social justice.

  • Teacher education faculty at ECU have modeled,
    discussed, and emphasized the development of
    dispositions throughout the teacher education
    program.
  • However, candidate dispositions have never been
    systematically assessed.

  • During the 03-04 academic year the Council for
    Teacher Education developed a survey of teacher
    education candidate dispositions.
  • The survey was field tested during the 04-05
    academic year.
  • The survey is now a required assessment of all
    teacher education candidates.

Dispositions Survey
  • Form A Awareness
  • Completed by student in Early Experience course
    based on prior related experiences
  • Used to create awareness of expectations for
    their behavior and current level of performance
  • Indicates that behavior is present, emerging, or
    needs to be developed

  • Completed by the Clinical Teacher in the Senior I
    Internship
  • Used to provide feedback to interns about
    development of these behaviors
  • Indicates that behavior is present, developing,
    or needs to be developed

  • Completed by the University Supervisor (with
    input from the Clinical Teacher) in the Senior II
    Internship
  • Used to evaluate the behavior of the intern
  • Indicates frequency of a behavior (Always,
    usually, sometimes, never)

  • The Candidate

    professional ethics.
  • wears professional attire for teachers when in a
    school setting.
  • demonstrates reliability by performing assigned
    tasks or duties on time without prompting.
  • displays a positive attitude toward teaching and
    interactions with students and families.

    seeks positive outlets for emotions.
