- Delivery of WP 5
- Problems to be solved, conclusions and
recommendations
3SEVEN RESEARCH AREAS OF INTEREST
- Alternative and new road construction materials
- New techniques for monitoring
- How maintenance works can be investigated as part
of ALT - How to evaluate pavement environment related
issues - Pavement design methods and models
- Effect of vehicle variables on pavement
performance - How to deal with collaborative techniques,
collaborative partnerships, harmonisation,
reliability of results and scale factors
4DELIVERY OF WORK PACKAGE 5
- A catalogue of new pavement research topics where
ALT could be used today and in the future was
developed in Wp 5
5IDEA COLLECTION
- Brainstorming Session
- Information from other work packageswithin COST
347 - Information from other sources
- Compile the information together with new ideas
from WP 5 members
6CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
- As today, one of the main future purposes of ALT
Provide accelerated evaluation of pavement
performance - ALT, a link between laboratory tests and
Real-time Load Testing - ALT, a fixed part of the acceptance testing
procedure - ALT as an element in a series of test methods at
different levels in a pavement research program
7RESEARCH INTO ALTERNATIVE AND NEWROAD
CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS
Pavement designer and owner problems
- Satisfactory performance?? Gain experience of
in-situ behaviour? Evaluate the key engineering
properties in-situ? Determine the optimum
mixture proportions? Determine the optimum mode
or position of application - Any problems using the material, like pollutions
from the material to the surroundings, etc?
8RESEARCH INTO ALTERNATIVE AND NEWROAD
CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS
- In this research topic there can be a large
contribution from ALT? ALT has an important
role in defining the adequacy of a wide range of
novel materials which currently fall outside the
limits of experience of use - ? ALT will help users to define the best means
of using such materials - ? Acceptance testing using ALT
9RESEARCH INTO ALTERNATIVE AND NEWROAD
CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS
- ALT is well suited to address some of the needs.
The ability to be able to assess the behaviour of
a new and a conventional material is a key
strength of ALT? Response under
trafficking - ALT is very suitable? Long-term
behaviour - ALT as an assessment? Ageing of
materials - ALT is not that suitable ? Easy to
place and compact - No direct use of ALT
(performance)? Bonding to existing pavement
materials - ALT can be suitable? In-situ
material properties - ALT is very
suitable? Determine the optimum mixture
proportion - ALT can be suitable ? Determine
the optimum mode or position of application
- ALT can be suitable ? Pollution from the
alternative material of the surrounding
environment - ALT not always best
10NEW TECHNIQUES - INSTRUMENTATION
- ? ALT instrumentation requires
re-consideration. Different applications of ALT
requires different instrumentation and/or
deployment? Consideration should be given to
collect data in a responsive manner and not only
to some pre-defined schedule ? Smart
instrumentation, capable of producing
outputs which depend on input condition, and
involving more than one sensor, needs to be
developed
11NEW TECHNIQUES - INSTRUMENTATION
- ? Wireless data collection, data storage and
data access issues all need addressing - ? More comparative testing between instruments
needed - ? Investigation and determination of
best-practice for instrumentation installation
needed - New techniques are important to ? Increase the
efficiency and quality in ALT work ? Obtain
reliable results ? Cause minimal disturbance in
the material ? Save money on ALT work in the
long run
12INVESTIGATION OF MAINTENANCE WORKS
Road owner problems
- Satisfactory performance?? Gain experience of
in-situ behaviour? Evaluate the key engineering
properties in-situ? Evaluate alternative
maintenance strategies
13INVESTIGATION OF MAINTENANCE WORKS
- In this research topic there can be a large
contribution from ALT - ALT has a significant capability for assessing
thesuitability of different pavement
rehabilitations, repair anddeterioration-preventi
on strategies? Response under trafficking - ALT
is very suitable? Long-term behaviour - ALT as
an assessment? Easy to place and compact - No
direct use of ALT (performance)? Bonding to
existing pavement layer - ALT can be
suitable? In-situ material properties - ALT is
very suitable? Climate effects (seasonal
frost, high temp, precipitation) - ALT can be
used, some cases
14EVALUATION OF PAVEMENTENVIRONMENT RELATED ISSUES
Road owner problems
- Pavements impact on the environment? Pollutions
(leaching to ground, dust and particles to
air, vehicle emissions, etc)? Noise, vibrations
and visual impacts, etc - The environments impact on the pavement? Water
(precipitation and movements in pavement)? High
and low temperatures? Frost-thaw, etc
15EVALUATION OF PAVEMENTENVIRONMENT RELATED ISSUES
- In this research topic there can be a
contribution from ALT in some specific areas
? ALT will seldom be most suited for studies of
the impact of the pavement on the environment?
Despite this generalisation, tyre and pavement
surface wear issues could be studied with ALT
16EVALUATION OF PAVEMENTENVIRONMENT RELATED ISSUES
- ? Water spray effects might also be studied in
some higher speed ALT equipments? Despite ALT
having limited applicability in aiding study of
the pavements impact on the environment,
the reverse is likely to be a prime ALT
capability
17PAVEMENT DESIGN
Pavement designer problem
- Be able to estimate design life of a pavement and
the deterioration process (design and performance
models) - Be able to define design parameters
- To get acceptance for designprocedures or design
assumptions - Estimation of failure mechanism
- Assess calculation methods
18PAVEMENT DESIGN
- In this research topic there can be a large
contribution from ALT ? ALT continues to
offer benefits to pavement design? Design
methods, material models, failure
mechanisms, loading effects and time-related
effects (healing, etc.) are all assessable
19EFFECT OF VEHICLE VARIABLES ONPAVEMENT
PERFORMANCE
Road owner problem
- Be able to know how
- ? Different load levels ? Type of tyres ?
Tyre pressures ? Suspensions ? Rest periods ?
Speed ? Dynamic loads ? etc - influence pavement performance
20EFFECT OF VEHICLE VARIABLESON PAVEMENT
PERFORMANCE
- In this research topic therecan be a large
contributionfrom ALT - ALT continous to contributeregarding the effect
of differentvehicle variables on
pavementperformance
21OTHER FACTORS
- ? There is a need for collaboration between
different ALT owners and between different ALT
funders ? This will open up the possibility
of repeatability and reproducibility studies,
speed of loading studies and of a greater range
of material properties / pavement types /
loading regimes - ? Harmonisation of test procedures and analyses
of test results are important
22OTHER FACTORS
- ? Studies of the relationships of different
scale factors have to be performed more in the
future - ? There is no immediate need for more
European ALT facilities, but rather a need for
stronger co- operation among the existing
facilities to complement each other
